a fawn appeared at the side of the fenced yard one day. can you see it, there in the middle?

it saw me, and hid down in the weeds.

it hung out at our house for a while, but amy and jim also saw it next door.  here it is, nestled outside their fence as their blind italian greyhound, Izzy, sniffed the air – she could smell that fawn but she just couldn’t find it.

i took les paul for a walk and he tromped all around in the vinca growing down by the water.  i wasn’t paying attention to him for a second and then there was this terrible noise – i can’t describe it, but it was the sound of the poor frightened fawn – les had spotted it and i bet he jumped on it.  because les is a little bit crazy and think he can take on a little deer.

luckily the fawn settled back down into the cool vines.  whew.

i spotted the mother deer outside the fenced yard.

and though they look like baby deer, here are three of amy’s darling dogs.

mom and i sat out on her patio one evening and the deer and fawn ventured over.  mom gave baby a bath for quite some time, as baby was feeding.  i’ve never seen that in the wild before.

they started to walk away…

…and then they headed for the woods at the side of mom’s property.  the only problem with that is that the road is right on the other side of the woods.  i hope they were safe.

just yesterday i startled a fawn lying outside the fenced yard, but i’m pretty sure it must be a new one, because the one above must be bigger now, a month later.

and this morning as les and i sat out in the yard enjoying the cool breeze, a bunny hopped by and i’m pretty sure the mink came out of the wood pile.

it’s very wild around here lately.

ok then,

mrs. middle of july hughes.
