although it was more like a SMASH as the frosty cold bottle of diet snapple i’d put in the car and was carrying into mom and dad’s house SHATTERED to the ground.
luckily it was in a skoozie so most of the glass shattered inside that, but of course i lost all my delicious icy-cold snapple, which i was looking forward to as we continued with the LITERALLY NEVER-ENDING moving process, which will probably never actually end. ever.
we packed up many kitchen things despite dad’s serious doubts that they’d all fit into the new kitchen cabinets. packing, packing, packing, for about an hour or so, then we mom and i headed over to the new place.
we swung by home so i could replenish my snapple and mom got one, too. off we drove down the road, and my phone rang. it was amy, who mostly only texts. she said he was ok but jim had fallen on a walk and his co-worker had taken him to the emergency room cause he split his head open.
oh dear. amy had to go to work at some festival of all things zumba at 2:00 at the hilton downtown, and it was now a little after one. i said we’d drop her off downtown for her zumba thing and then we’d go get jim at the hospital. we couldn’t take the van cause there was no room for passengers.
so mom and i ended up taking a drive all around the lake and returning home to get kevin’s cadillac. meanwhile amy found out that she needed to take her very very very heavy sound system cause the one at the hilton didn’t work. i drove the caddy next door so she could lug it into the trunk. mollie came along for that brief ride from one house to the next because she was very excited and knew that many things were going on and didn’t want to miss out.
i coerced mollie back out of the car, mom and i took amy to the hilton and she staggered away dragging the heavy speaker system and we headed over to st. john’s.
jim’s friendly co-worker, angie, was there in the waiting room and said they’d just taken jim back.
because blood had been pouring down his face and covered his hand that was clutching his head, he got speedy service. also there weren’t so many people there.
they let us into his room, and the doctor had just finished sewing him up.

this picture DOES NOT DO THE WOUND JUSTICE; it looked much worse than that. and of course he was grinning and being perfectly calm, because he’s sweet jim. it was all bloody and there was a HUGE and painful-looking bump all around the big gash, which took six stitches.
more than anythin,g Jim seemed upset at himself for his accident; he’d been walking downtown near his office, briskly i assume, and passed a woman who was sitting on a bench smoking. he changed course to avoid her and was going to duck under some large statue, but instead smacked straight into it. ouch.
he was wearing a baseball cap, but realized that blood was oozing out of it. he kept his hand over the hat, and that’s when the blood started running down his arm onto his hand.
so there he was, walking around downtown with blood all over him, and i was amazed that nobody stopped and offered to help. he said he walked past the library, where the homeless people were hanging out, and he figured none of them felt that somebody with a gushing head wound was anything out of place.
he walked quickly through the alley and back to his office building a few blocks away, and then he walked all the way up the stairs and asked his co-worker to look at his wound to see what it looked like and she said OH MY GOD and that’s when he felt a little woozy.
you never want to hear OH MY GOD when you ask somebody something like that.
she said he needed to get to the hospital and did he want an ambulance, but he didn’t, so she drove him over.
they went to memorial hospital instead of st. john’s cause he didn’t realize that us with the state insurance need to go to st. john’s. it amazes me that he didn’t know that already, but he usually doesn’t need any medical attention.
she took him to st. john’s and when we got there we took him home…well, we were GOING to take him home, but we had to stop back at the hilton to give Jim’s car keys to amy so she’d have a way home when the event was over at five.
i pulled the big caddy into a spot out front and jim went to find amy and give her the keys. mom and i worried that he shouldn’t have done that because he said he felt exhausted, and what if he had more trauma and fainted or something? i decided to pull up into the valet place right in front of the door…and the car wouldn’t start. i kept trying it, and it sounded like it was going to start but it didn’t.
good grief. i called kevin, and held the phone up so he could hear the noise it made.
“is there gas in it?” he asked.
oh. i looked down.
the electronic gas gauge read E.
whoops. nope, no gas.
jim eventually returned, not having passed out at all, and we spent a pleasant half hour sitting in the car waiting for kevin to show up with the gas can.
luckily it was a perfect day and we were in the shade and the caddy is very comfortable.
kevin and mollie arrived, and she was thrilled to be part of the excitement and kevin said he and mollie would drive jim home in the caddy so mom and i could take the van over to the new house with all the stuff.
oh yeah, moving.
it’s better anyway that kevin drove jim home, because for sure nothing bad would happen then.
and mom and i got to continue with the moving and dad came over to the new house and all the stuff from the kitchen cabinets fit just fine in the new cabinets and there was even room left over.
now i’m sitting here trying to gather up all my strength and fortitude for more moving today.
oh boy.
last day of march.
ok then,
mrs. h.
