In my last post I forgot to post these two pictures of the bears, just hanging out…

and then, the penguins!  I think I liked them so much because they were so very funny and seemed perfectly content to waddle around and swim and gather nesting material.  these are the Humboldt penguins, which are native to peru, like the warm weather, and are threatened.  as I wrote earlier, it seems that most wild animals are at some level of threat.

one little penguin laboriously gathers grasses to build a nest.  it makes me laugh every time.

and the penguin keeps at it, despite the throngs watching…

it was time for feeding, and a zookeeper explained a lot about the penguins to us.  one thing she said is that the ones without the black lines in the front were young penguins, and at some point they shed all their feathers and they’re replaced with the racing stripes you see on most of them here.

she said she wears three layers of gloves, but it’s still painful when the penguins bite her cause they’re so excited about the food.

here she is in action.

and that’s it for penguins at the zoo!

well, that’s all for now – after this we went inside to the chilly place where they keep the penguins who live in Antarctica.  coming soon!

ok then,

mrs. sunday very productive morning hughes.
