our friend beverly ryan sent me the answer to the math problem, and it makes me feel EVEN MORE MATHEMATICALLY CHALLENGED, if that was even possible.
i still don’t understand it.
here’s the original problem, from mary patton, former math teacher:
A MAN INVESTS $900 MORE AT 4% ANNUAL INTEREST THAN HE DOES AT 5%. THE INCOME FROM THE 4% INVESTMENT IS $19 LESS THAN THE INCOME FROM THE 5% INVESTMENT. HOW MUCH WAS INVESTED AT 4%?
and here is the answer,
(A + $900) * 0.04 + $19 = A * 0.05 expand the (A + $900) * 0.04
A * 0.04 + $36 + $19 = A * 0.05 subtract A * 0.04 from both sides of the formula
$55 = A * 0.01 multiple both sides by 100
$5500 = A
$5500 + $900 = $6400 = amount invested at 4%
$6400 * 0.04 = $256 plug in the solution to check if it works
$5500 * 0.05 = $275
$256 + $19 = $275
wowie, that’s all i have to say. plus bev pointed out that kevin brown and lola lucas WERE at one of our halloween parties, quite a few years ago when we lived in westchester. i think that was our second party, in 2006.
PLUS beverly brought some killer chocolate caramel brownies to the party but i didn’t see her bring them. there were leftovers and we’ve been snacking on them all week and have been wondering who left their nice glass pan, and it was beverly! so, great math knowledge, delicious brownie baker, fantastic memory…beverly is one all-over good person!
that is all for this very rainy thursday morning.
ok then,
mrs. h.
