and this morning it’s also gray and there’s a little snow coming down, but nothing to worry about, hopefully.

more photos from our trip to gulf shores…here’s last monday, and it seems hard to believe it was just a week and a couple days ago.  it was so great to get up and sit out on the balcony!

those ropes are the ones the guys painting the building were using.  i was worried that they’d be painting our balcony, ruining my chance to sit outside, all the time we were there.  but of course it’s not a huge balcony and it didn’t take them long.

wayne asked kevin lots of questions about his diabetes, and kevin showed him how to test his blood.  wayne’s blood is just fine.

there they are on their scaffolding, making the ascent.  over there on the left is the hot tub, which was a lukewarm tub, in reality.

i ran to get my phone as the guy went right by us on his way to the top.  i waved at him and he waved back, but i didn’t get a picture.

we stopped by the workout room on our way to walk on the beach.  what a fantastic view for working out!

we walked all the way to a very long pier, but were amazed when we got there that they charge you to go out on it!  luckily i could use the bathroom at the beginning of the pier.  i’d wondered why there weren’t so many people out there.  it was 2 bucks to go out on it, and if you wanted to fish, it was more, plus you had to get a fishing license.  i mean, in very expensive santa monica, CA, you could walk all the way out to the end of their fabulous pier and sit there and enjoy the sunshine, and it was free!  plus they had all kinds of carnival rides if you wanted to do that, and a restaurant.  i can’t recall ever going on a pier anywhere where they charged you.  ridiculous.

i love the water birds.  i took many, many pictures of them, and did my best to not put all of them up here.

i thought this seagull only had one leg – sometimes we have geese in the yard who have an injured leg, and they limp around and i feel horrible for them and want to bring them in, but of course that would be a very terrible idea.  but of course this seagull had both his legs, he was just standing there like that.  maybe resting one leg?  keeping it warm?  maybe that’s just the way they like to stand.

there was a little divey restaurant right next to our condo, called the sea-n-suds.  it was very basic, with a concrete floor, but it was out on the sand with great views, and the food was cheap and good.  this half-dozen oysters was a mere $4.50!  the cheapest oysters i had, and they were so delicious!  i think i had oysters every day.  you see there’s just a plastic fork, and the waitress showed me how to make my own cocktail sauce with ketchup, worstershire sauce, and horseradish.  mmmm good.

while we were having lunch it started to rain, and then started to rain really hard.  some guy next to us was in one of those motorized wheely chairs, and he said he’d have to roll back to his place in the rain.  not fun.

we planned on going to an open mike night at a place called florabama, which was about 20 minutes away, on the border of florida and alabama.  we went there last year and the music was pretty good, but the food, not so great.

wayne and kevin discussed playing at the open mike, and they sat around and jammed while i uploaded pictures onto my computer.  a good way to spend a rainy afternoon.

they decided not to play at the open mike, so we just went to listen.

and the food…worse than before.  this was another divey place, with burgers and basic stuff like that on the menu.  it took an hour to get our food, and then they didn’t even show up with kevin’s burger…the waitress had given it to somebody else!  i’m sure those other people had been waiting so long that they were glad to get whatever.

most of the performers seemed to know each other, and this big woman was in charge, and eventually she played with these other two women.  they were pretty good, and the woman there on the right had the biggest guitar i’ve ever seen.  it was very wide.  the one on the left was the one in charge, and she reminded me of some disney character, and i finally remembered who – the villian in “little mermaid.”

here’s a photo of ursula the villian.

very similar, except the MC wasn’t an octopus, as far as i could tell.

it’s also funny, because these singing women made me think of this sketch i’m going to do in the play “parallel lives,” which i’m going to be in this march.  the play is a bunch of sketches, and in one, two of us are feminist singers, and we sing this ridiculous song, very 70s feminism kinds of stuff.  so we’ll kind of be like those women, only no giant guitar, plus our singing won’t be as good.

and that’s all for wednesday,

ok then,
