we went out to dinner with janice and gerrick last night, gone a couple of hours. when we got home, mollie was, as always, eager and happy to see us. she’d managed to unscrew the top off her big dry dog food container, but hadn’t gotten any food out. because kevin added a lock to the cabinet she has broken into (and flung various types of flour and cocoa all over the floor), and we put a heavy weight in front of the pantry door she shoves open with her nose, she hadn’t gotten into anything.
she jumped up on the couch and i petted her and she YELPED a few times, as if i’d stepped on her tail. this was alarming, but then she seemed ok.
we went to bed, and she was restless. at 1:30, she got in bed with us, wanted to get under the covers, but wasn’t happy there. she started panting, and when she would lie down, she’d get back up in three seconds. she jumped down, went outside, roamed around, came back in…we talked about taking her to the emergency vet, but decided we could wait til morning.
then the panting got worse, plus she started trembling all over. and then, just lying therein bed, she yelped again. so at 3:30, we all got in the car and headed for the emergency vet.
the guy was very very nice, very thorough, and very reassuring. he said, after examining her, he thought it was a back issue. he gave her a big shot of a good drug, and sent us home with pills for her to take.
finally, at five a.m., we all went back to bed. we all slept very well for a few hours.
so, today…what i wonder is, how do working mothers with infants even survive at all? most of them have their youth on their side, but even when i was younger, being sleep-deprived makes me oh, so loopy. and if that feeling went on for days, weeks, months on end? plus having a full-time job? i don’t even like to imagine it.
things are somewhat better now. we gave mollie her first pill early (with the vet’s ok) because she was still trembling a lot. she just sat there on the floor for a long time this morning, looking at us. she couldn’t get comfortable. and, most alarming of all, she had NO INTEREST IN A TREAT. this is completely unprecedented.
i’m happy to report that right now she’s lying on the living room rug, munching away at the treat that’s been there all day. we went outside and she didn’t wag her tail, but it did kind of swing listlessly a little bit, much better than the tucking it between her legs that she’s been doing all day.
i want to know, how did this happen? if only we had a mollie cam, we might have seen her jumping up, trying to get winnie’s food off the counter, or maybe she was trying to jump over the wall outside to get the raccoon. impossible to say.
whew. i think we’ll all sleep well tonight.
ok then,
mrs. tuesday not quite here hughes.
