except for being sick, but i’m almost better, but i’ve had a horrible cold that turned into an achy, drained, awful awfulness that went on waaaay too long.
it has made my brain feel really slow, too, which is pretty bad because it hasn’t been exactly zipping along to begin with.
today, getting better.
and here, the final photos from august, now that i see the end of september in sight. it’s the final tomb ceremony, held the last tuesday before labor day.
kevin is there in the back, just to the right of the buy with the gun up in the air.

what are they doing here? fixing bayonets? i feel that is what they are doing, but then again, i’m not entirely sure what that means. maybe they are checking their guns. maybe kevin will elucidate for us.

this is one of my favorite parts of the ceremony, when they all fan around in a semi-circle.

when they do this, it always makes me think of one of those maneuvers in any busby berkeley musical, with the dancers fanning around and then, of course, starting up a kick line.
the 114th, though, has yet to start kicking at the end of their turn.

maybe someday.
and i know, I KNOW, RANDY, there are no photos of the darling and photogenic lester here. i will work right now on getting more of them.
ok ok ok already,
mrs. hughes.

We are in condition “inspection arms” at this point in ceremony. After the officers move past us in the ranks, we remove the ram-rod from the barrel (the r-r in barrel shows that the musket is not loaded). That’s what I’m doing in the photo – then we “unfix bayonets” and put them back in the scabbard and stand at attention….
thanks for the update, pvt. k!
