Yeah, where have I been? Well, for one thing, Mom and I got back from an impromptu trip to NYC, and we just got back on Tuesday. That’s the Tuesday that we just had, June 23rd. We left for NYC on Thursday June 18th and saw some plays and did some stuff and many things happened.

But so, what about anything from April? And May? And the rest of June? Well, April, flowers bloomed, and then there were cats. May, goslings were hatched, I had yet another birthday, more cats. June, Kevin started in on Lincoln’s Tomb ceremonies and all through those months I was furiously working on our yard. I did the last thing I could do yesterday, before the Huge Heat rolled in. I got quite a lot done, actually, most things on my mighty list, and the rest will just have to wait.

And now, I sit here in the air-conditioning. Aaah, air-conditioning, so good.

But present day – well, yesterday – Kevin and the 114th marched in a parade in Rochester. He, Mom and I piled in the van at the crack of 10:10 and headed to Rochester, depositing him at the starting point.

Mom and I drove to the end point and parked, then found a shady place to set up our chairs right near the stopping spot. We didn’t have to wait long, and there was a nice breeze, and the parade started fairly quickly. It was a fine parade, mainly consisting of varying ages of county fair and other queens, plus a few politicians of course, a couple marching bands, and assorted stuff not worth mentioning.

However, what’s a parade without throwing out candy? And I figure the reason they were really going to town throwing it out at us is because they could see the end of the line and they wanted to unload the remainder. We were pelted with mostly suckers and fruity candy that holds no interest for me, but there were occasional bite-sized chocolate bars. Of course I’ve eaten them all already. One highly interesting goodie was this, a brownie! I still haven’t opened it, figuring, how good could a brownie be that’s been thrown by a county fair queen or a politician? But I’m still hopeful…I mean, it is chocolate, after all.

We gave the rest of the candy to some happy little kids not far from us. Me and the little kids, all happy to get candy. So I guess you never age out of finding happiness in getting free parade candy. At least I don’t, anyway. And only if it’s chocolate, of course.

And then there was Kevin! Ta Da!

There weren’t many from his regiment but each one who was there was mighty brave, marching along in their sweltering wool uniforms.

He finished up, walked back to the car, and a fine time was had by all.

Mom, of course, was nicely dressed complete with jewelry…this is pretty remarkable because the last thing that happened to us in New York is she fell on a marble staircase outside the Frick Museum and we went to a nearby urgent care place and she’d fractured her shoulder. We flew home on Tuesday, she got into a great orthopedic surgeon here in Springfield on Friday, just two days ago, and she’s going to have surgery this coming Thursday, four days from now.

Like I said, many things happening. At least Mom’s not in a lot of pain and the surgeon thinks she’ll recover pretty well and you can’t usually say that about a 90 year-old.

Whew.

Ok then,

Grace H.
