Way back in August, Monday Aug. 17th to be exact, after leaving Conservation World Bev and I headed over to see the Butter Cow. I’m looking kind of bedraggled here; I think that’s just how you get after walking around the fair.

We then went to the Hobbies Arts & Crafts building and I should definitely go there first next time because I love to pore over the different displays of antiques. Here’s an interesting collection of postcards from Cardiff, Illinois.

The description was fascinating.

A tiny Illinois town that sprang up in 1899 because of the coal discovery and then went away thirteen years later! Who knew? It had so many things, including as many as 16 saloons at one time, plus a first class hotel, a semi-pro baseball team, a school, a church, stores. It was in Northern Illinois, on the way to Chicago.
A few postcards from Springfield, including two of Lincoln’s Tomb, inside and out, the Capital, the Leland Hotel, and Washington Park.

I can’t figure out where in the park this picture was taken, and it’s fascinating that this was 1909. I didn’t know the park has been around so long.

And here’s a Statue of Liberty fruit bowl! I love it and I want one.

Ditto this cool piece of art.

I kept examining so many of the antiques and taking pictures and I didn’t get to spend as much time there as I’d have liked. Next time, next time…
We headed towards the Fair entrance at 2:45 because I needed to leave by three. But as you may recall, I also really wanted a bunch of fair food and I’d only had a sleeve of perfect Culler’s fries at 10:30 in the morning. I really wanted a corn dog, and I knew there wasn’t time to go to Vose’s corn dogs because it was too far and I was sure the line would be long.
But as we headed up Main Street I stopped and got a Coleman’s corn dog and it was delicious, albeit it was necessary to stuff it into my face while walking. But still…
When we’d headed through Conservation World earlier in the day I stopped and bought a cool metal Starved Rock Christmas ornament. But as we were driving home I didn’t feel like I had it, so Bev looked through my purse as I drove and nope, it wasn’t there. Dang. It was unlikely that I’d be back to the fair to get another one.
We got home and I had to immediately head out to a doctor’s appointment and at a light I dug through my purse, and there was the ornament!

Yay, a perfect ending to a too-brief day at the fair. But really not so brief, because it’s tiring being at the fair. Next year, so many plans.
Ok then, Mrs. Next Year, Not So Far Away Hughes.
