mubarak has left office! it’s an amazing, extraordinary, historic day, one that will be remembered forever. on the news, young people were talking about the fact that they’ve never known freedom in their lifetime. a sobering thought.
meanwhile, here in springfield, an event celebrating our own emancipator…
this morning the 114th volunteer infantry joined abe and mary lincoln at lincoln depot, where a crowd read lincoln’s farewell address in unison, in an attempt to break a record for people reading one document in unison. people all over the country read the document, a total of three times, for five minutes.
i decided to go with kevin because i figured i wouldn’t totally freeze to death.
i dressed warmly.

everybody walked over to lincoln’s home, where the official march to the depot was to take place.

lincoln came out of his home, and then kept going in to get more bags. wouldn’t he have had somebody to help him?

finally, he came out one last time with mary.

the lincolns climbed into the carriage and away they went, with the 114th marching behind on the sometimes crazily icy street. why didn’t anybody put a little salt down so it would be less like a skating rink along there? i guess they don’t get a lot of tourists this time of year, but on the other hand, since tomorrow IS lincoln’s birthday, you’d think there would be people visiting.

as they marched along i jogged to keep up, trying to shoot pictures and not slip on the ice.

here’s the crowd following along behind.

and this is a video of the sight.
i have more photos, more videos, but i have to give a massage now. soon i will post the rest of it.
ok then,
mrs. hughes in a big big hurry on this HISTORIC DAY OF FREEDOM.
