maybe these guys should be in charge of the relief effort in haiti. i just watched a video clip of anderson pulling a bleeding kid away from a crowd of looters who were THROWING BRICKS DOWN ON PEOPLE.
i can’t imagine the horror of having everything around you completely destroyed and then having no food or water or aid of any kind, and i probably would want to loot, too…but i just can’t imagine being so mad that i’d want to hurl blocks of concrete down on people. but then again, i don’t get mad, i get sad. i’d probably just be doing a lot of sobbing.
and then there’s the story of sanjay doing brain surgery on a 12 year-old girl.
i keep wanting to read everything; i check the cnn daily report a lot, i watch the stories on cnn, i’m all about the cnn…but then i just can’t bear to watch it and i just want to know CAN’T THEY ALL FORM A HUGE LINE OF PEOPLE from the airport to where the people in need are, can’t they just form this huge line and pass stuff down the line? because it seems like lots of supplies and lots of people have arrived, but they’re just not getting in, the trucks can’t make it over the roads.
big line of people. pass the stuff down the line.
i was dumbfounded the other night, the story about sanjay gupta being the only doctor left in the tent; i think they were belgian doctors and some belgian person in charge made the call that the doctors should leave because it “wasn’t safe…” so they just all walked away from the patients in need of care, they took their supplies and left.
so sanjay stayed all by himself, taking care of the poor injured traumatized people.
amazing. sanjay and anderson, maybe they should think about running for office after obama is no longer in the white house.
so let’s try a lighter note here, escape escape escape from the tragedy…
first, NINE! mom and i went to see the movie “nine” yesterday afternoon, which is based on the musical “nine” which is based on the movie “8 1/2” by federico fellini. i never saw the musical nine, nor the movie 8 1/2. i feel i need to see the movie now.
but NINE the movie – I LOVED IT. it was splashy and big and lots with lots of big dance numbers and all the women were great and it was fun and total escapist fun.
i had doubts about seeing it because randy saw it and kept saying that it “wasn’t so good,” he kept saying that daniel day-lewis was miscast. i think daniel DL was just fine; his character was a philandering ass, really, a “tormented artist,” and that was kind of annoying and it was kind of difficult to understand what all these fabulous women saw in him, why they were all so in love with him…but it didn’t matter, really, because it was fun and big and splashy and i loved it. everybody smoked all the time, too, and i’m VERY VERY ANT-SMOKING, but the smoking was so funny in the movie; it was the 60’s, everybody did it, they were always blowing smoke in each other’s faces and there was just so much smoke everywhere.
so i felt kind of annoyed with randy after seeing it. i didn’t actually get mad at him, because i’m trying to be a nicer person overall and not get mad at people if they’re SO INCREDIBLY WRONG about something that i like.
for example, “moulin rouge.”
christine and i saw moulin rouge in LA and I LOVED IT, more than “nine,” more than many movies i can think of. it was VERY BIG and VERY COLORFUL with many fabulous numbers and funny and ewan mcgregor and I LOVE THAT MOVIE.
christine thought it was boring.
ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR MIND???? that was my basic reaction to her opinion.
YOU ARE CLEARLY OUT OF YOUR MIND. was my reaction, basically.
and then i was mad at her.
i know, I KNOW, it’s VERY BAD to be mad at your friend just because they have a VERY STUPID OPINION ABOUT A GREAT MOVIE.
so like i said, i’m trying to be a better person.
not so easy to achieve.
anyway, i highly recommend seeing “nine.”
except christine, of course.
today kevin and i saw “sherlock holmes” and it was pretty good. funny that robert downey jr. got a golden globe for best actor in a comedy, because it was really an action-adventure-type movie. there was a little too much punching and dumb senseless violence stuff in it, but really, it was pretty entertaining.
not “nine,” surely, but good enough.
maybe i’m on a roll now, maybe i’ll get to see MORE movies, like “up in the air.” i wish some of those romantic comedies that have come out lately would be good but they sound pretty bad, which is a shame – i hear such awful things about “did you hear about the henderson?” and that’s SARAH JESSICA PARKER and HUGH GRANT, for god’s sake! and an idea that sounds good. and “it’s complicated” – mom saw it and didn’t like it, and she’s usually much less critical of movies than i am. but, alec baldwin? meryl streep? no good? sad, i say, sad.
ok, one quick thing before i go tonight…earlier today i gave mollie a treat. she usually gets a mini dingo knot, a little rawhide before bed, and she always wolfs them down. i felt bad because we were gone a lot today, though, so i gave her a medium-sized knot. she trotted all around with it, very pleased, but didn’t eat it, and then she went outside. i followed her out after a while, and she was very busily pushing it with her nose, neatly covering it up with leaves. she seemed quite pleased with her efforts. i just don’t understand this instinct of hers, because she doesn’t get to eat the treat and she’s usually about instant gratification.
but just now she brought the treat inside, parading around with it in her mouth. it was covered with leaves and mud, and i finally wrestled it out of her mouth and washed the mud off and now she’s lying the rug, happily chomping her rawhide. so life is good for our puppy.
that is all for now. i hope you had a nice vacation day if you vacationed, and if you didn’t get the day off, like my poor aunt sandy who had to work hard ALL DAY LONG, at least tomorrow is tuesday and not monday…
ok ok ok,
grace
p.s. we keep having “freezing fog” advisories. i find this odd. it has been very very foggy because of the snow and the rising temps, i guess, but i haven’t witnessed any freezing fog. randy says it’s fog that freezes and turns into a hard ice wall, which is what you’d think of when you think of freezing fog.

Very stupid, huh? I think I’m mad at you.
Just kidding. I want to see Nine. I won’t tell you if I don’t like it. 😉
I need to make plans to come for a visit. Maybe in March?
