on sept. 11th, randy and I went down to the st. louis zoo. he’d never been to any zoo anywhere his entire life, and I had to pick up my friend Toun at the airport, so I thought we’d make a day of it.
I can’t remember the last time i’d been to this zoo, but I think it might have been at least 20 years ago. I have very mixed feelings about zoos – they make me feel like the animals are in prison, but on the other hand they do a fantastic job of helping animals. I was a little shocked at how many of them are very endangered or almost extinct.
just the other day, as a matter of fact, I was appalled to hear on the radio that there are only 400,000 elephants left in Africa and poachers kill 40,000 of them a year. so they’ll all be gone in 10 years? ugh.
on a happier note, here are a few of the many many photos I took at the zoo. I did my best to not take pictures of every single thing, and then I winnowed them down, so here is the beginning of the sampling.
these turtles were so huge!

and then we went to the monkey house – only small monkeys were housed there, and I wasn’t thrilled with how small some of their habitats seemed to be. plus look at this – does the monkey think that painted backdrop is a real jungle? this guy looks so thoughtful.

this was a family; there’s a little baby in between the parents.

these were so funny-looking – they’re called Coquerel’s sifika, and they can leap really far.

I tried to get a video of them leaping, but it didn’t happen. but this is a cute video.

more to come soon. many more, but not a ridiculous amount.
meanwhile, right now I have to go back to st. louis again today.
ok then,
mrs. busy sunday morning hughes.
