Tuesday Dec. 10th, the rest of our first full day in NYC was very busy. After our long walk up the High Line park we stopped briefly at the super fancy new Hudson Yards shopping mall and then took the new subway to get over to Times Square. It was late in the afternoon and scads of people were rushing to get on the insanely steep and long escalator going down to the subway. I wish i’d taken a picture but it was a little unnerving to ride on such a steep escalator.

It was pandemonium when we reached Times Square, as it always is. Even though it always is, it’s still kind of jarring. We made our way to Rockefeller Center which was moderately stuffed with tourists gawking at the tree.

and then, the Rockettes! Here’s the lobby of Radio City Music Hall. i didn’t notice til now that the wreaths in the lobby say “Chase.” how christmasy.

About 10 minutes before she show started these two guys were suddenly playing christmas carols on organs on either side of the stage. fun!

The show was awesome. The funny thing is that before we went to New York, Mom saw the Rockettes on TV and said, “i don’t really want to go see them.” i told her that they’d be better in person, and luckily she agreed after going to the show.

it was all so much spectacle – great dancing and costumes and the scenery was fantastic plus they did some 3D stuff at the beginning which was entertaining. at some point they did a brief version of the whole nativity thing, with live animals including at least three camels, some sheep and maybe…goats? i can’t exactly remember.

the Rockettes did their kick lines a few times, but then they did it at the very end of the finale, in their gold costumes. I fuiously took pictures and was pleased to get this great shot of the kick line with santa and the other characters in the background.

Kevin and i had seen the show when we went to new york for the first time, in 2006, shortly after we got married. i have vague memories of all the spectacle, but i’m pretty sure the lavishness was ramped up this time.

Afterwards we walked up 5th Avenue briefly, and here’s Saks, right across from Rockefeller Center.

Here’s a video to show you what it was like.

Even though one of my plans for the trip was to stroll along the shops on 5th Avenue, we didn’t linger. The place was just too jam-packed with people.

Instead, we went back to Brooklyn and walked north from our subway stop just two blocks to a delicious, hip thai restaurant called Misc. Mom had pad see ew and i had a modern version of a curry dish. we both had delicious cocktails, which were still at happy hour prices – happy hour lasts til 8:30 there!

It was a day packed full of stuff, and very enjoyable.

ok then,

mrs. two days til xmas i don’t really have time to sit here typing hughes.
