a belated happy birthday, that is.

for jim’s birthday we had german chocolate cake.  it was quite delicious and of course i kept eating it after i’d finished my piece – i was sitting right next to the cake and kept cutting little slivers off with my fork.

amy and jim went to visit sandy yesterday and i said PUT A NOTE ON THE CAKE THAT SAYS “DON’T EAT!”   because i knew that if i opened the fridge and saw the cake sitting there staring at me, i’d JUST START EATING IT.

this morning i went over to take care of the cats and the fish and opened the fridge.  there was the cake, with a note.  the note read EAT ME.

uh oh.

not the right message for me, mrs. grace hughes.  i called amy and told her that i was going to get a fork and dig right in.

she laughed.  she thought i was kidding.

the retarded swimming upside-down fish seems to be in worse shape, if you want to know the truth.  it’s a miracle that amy has kept it alive this long.  i feel that it’s in a deeper aquarium since the last time.  i can’t be sure, but i had to stick almost my entire arm down in.  my new routine involves no shelled half-peas, thank god.  instead i had to place a little mound of food at the bottom and then scoot the fish over and make sure it sucked up some of the pieces.  amy said he might then spit them all out, which would be bad, but she didn’t say what i was supposed to do if this happened.

luckily he didn’t spit them out, but i’m not 100% sure that he actually ate any.  plus, i really had to hold onto him to maneuver him over the food, and i was worried that i’d squish him.  when i let go, he just laid there on the bottom on his side.  OH NO.  I’VE CRUSHED HIS FIN.  NOW I’LL HAVE TO SET IT IN A CAST.  THIS WILL BE VERY DIFFICULT.

but i think he was ok.  i hope he was ok.  DON’T DIE ON MY WATCH, RETARDED FISH.

then i had to feed the tropical fish and amy had some specific instructions about how i had to feed them then WALK AWAY QUICKLY because otherwise they’d be freaked out and wouldn’t eat.

so i didn’t linger to watch the fish, i hurried away.

at least they’re coming back tomorrow.  their good puppies are draped over the couch and a chair, very happy here.  last night they slept in the hot tub room, but then the HUGE STORM started and i had the door to the outside open in there and the windows, and i went in and the rain was pounding in so i had to shut the door and the windows, and then i lied there in bed worrying that somehow it would get hot after the rain stopped and the puppies would be too hot.

IT DOESN’T HEAT UP IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT.

and THEN i had to worry about winnie, who is really scared of the dogs, and the dogs would chase him if he was around.  winnie had gone outside before we went to bed, and i went out on the porch and called and called him but couldn’t find him and it was raining SO HARD.  finally he showed up, dripping wet and quite unhappy.  i dried him with a paper towel as i gave him some food and somehow he survived the ordeal.

everything is much more peaceful around here this morning.

ok then,

later on saturday morning grace.
