in my hurry to post many photos, i woefully neglected to mention how kevin did in the shooting competition! he shot in eight different categories, four different kinds of guns – the revolver, the rifled musket, smoothbore, and the carbine. he was going to shoot all of these on the first day, but only got to do two of them because of the torrential rain; they ended up cancelling the shoot after he’d only done two. he then had to shoot the other six on friday morning, and then shot in a team competion in the afternoon.
he got SECOND PLACE in two of the revolver shoots! the only problem is that because we left on friday afternoon, and all the competitions weren’t over till sunday afternoon, he wasn’t able to find out the results, nor pick up his medals. his friend and teammate jim leineke was going to pick up kevin’s medals, but the people in charge wouldn’t give them to him.
kevin keeps saying that the reason is because somebody must have swiped somebody’s medals at some time in the past, so now security in handing out medals is very tight. but this doesn’t make much sense to me – it’s not like these are medals made of real gold or anything. why would anybody have wanted to steal somebody else’s medals, and why were they so strict about it? especially because jim is on some committee that oversees the whole big national shoot, plus in the past he’s been IN CHARGE of the whole thing! so of course the people giving out the medals know him, it’s not like he was some random guy wandering in off the county highway asking randomly for the medals that kevin won.
i think they’re a little bit overly-cautious is all i’m saying.
they told jim that the medals couldn’t be mailed; kevin would have to pick them up in the SPRING. good grief.
at least kevin e-mailed the guy in charge, and he put kevin in touch with the grand pooh-bah who oversaw something or other, and that person then told kevin that they’d be going out to the fort in the next week or so and would mail him the medals.
clearly, when they finally get here, we’ll have to build a fancy big case to put them in.
