Mom and I went to the fair on the first Friday,August 9th, something I can’t recall doing before. It was a beautifully not too hot day, which is rare and fabulous. We started off at the Illinois Building, where they’ve moved the flower arrangements.
Ok, first of all, we have lots of these growing in front of our house. Phlox! They’re a big favorite of the deer, so they’re covered in netting, but they’ve really spread and bloomed like crazy this year. Hmm, I wonder if I could have won an award? The one there on the right had wilted and I know ours look at least as good as the middle one.

No Grace, don’t go down that path. One year many years ago I baked a lovely loaf of french bread but didn’t get any kind of ribbon at all. So no more State Fair Foolery, please! But of course, the bad thing about the french bread debacle is that such a scrumptious loaf was wasted. So it’s not like a single stem of some plant of flower would be wasted. No no NO.
Here are some Coleus. Obviously, the one on the left looks fantastic, but why oh why is the one in the middle so sad and droopy? I just looked at the lengthy rules for them, and these plants were in place by Thursday morning, August 8th, and then had to be taken away Friday night. How did that Coleus get so bad so quickly?

The rules were way too much reading, 18 pages but there are rotating multiple categories that are displayed Friday, Tuesday, Thursday, and the last Friday and Saturday. There are also some categories that remain there the whole time, and I can’t even believe the number of categories. I had no idea.
This one was part of the division that Olympic-themed names. This one is “Triptych – “Citius, Altius, Fortius (Faster, Higher, Stronger)” Very pretty. That flower on the bottom is especially cool and I wonder what it’s called.

I thought this one was also very nice. I think it’s the same category but it won third place. Others included “High Dive” and “Olympic Flame” and I’m relieved I didn’t go crazy taking an excessive amount of photos, but on the other hand I bet some of them were good.

They also had a few table settings, but I think they were a little lame, not worthy of taking any photos.
That’s all I have time for today, but there are many more photos from this one day at the fair, not to mention the other days I went. I did go a little crazy at the Hobbies, Arts and Crafts building, but it’s my favorite building and I loved so much of the stuff displayed there. I’ll have to divide it into two posts because there are so many pictures.
Coming soon…
Ok then,
Mrs. Days Away from October Hughes.
