i’d been thinking about their delectable, rich and decadent soups for a while, and we went to celebrate columbus day. what better way to celebrate it than with a steaming bowl of deliciously fattening soup?

i hadn’t been to the feed store for a while, and for some reason it was pretty crowded, despite most people being off work. as we stood in line i carefully studied a menu, agonizing about what sandwich i wanted to go with my soup. the olive nut cream cheese sandwich is delicious, but i wanted some cucumber, so i toyed with the idea of the kuka-philly,or some cutesy name like that – it has vegetable cream cheese, cucumbers, swiss cheese, sprouts, and cucumber. maybe i could combine the two, and get the olive cream cheese on the other sandwich? plus a better cheese than swiss, maybe smoked gouda. and the pumpernickel bread looked good.

kevin had said he’d like some soup, so i called him to tell him his choices. he picked one, but as i continued to pore over the menu i decided he’d probably want a sandwich, too. i made randy hold the menu up in front of me so i could correctly type all the ingredients of the kuka philly sandwich to kevin, including the long lists of breads.

sure enough, kevin wanted a sandwich, too.

finally it was our turn to order and i tried to explain to the woman taking our orders what i wanted, and she tried to figure out how to write it in her server shorthand so that the sandwich maker would figure it out. i decided that there was maybe a 50-50 chance of getting the right thing.

we sat down, we finally got our orders, i didn’t get the right thing – plain old cream cheese instead of either veggie cream cheese or olive nut, plus the pumpernickle bread was kind of dry, but it was pretty good anyway, plus the mushroom bisque soup was delicious, as usual. they hadn’t brought kevin’s order, but somebody finally brought it before we left.

we ate, we paid, and i eventually came home.

kevin emerged from the basement, i got engrossed in other things, and pretty soon kevin said, “where’s my sandwich?”

so. not only did i TOTALLY FORGET about ordering him a sandwich, after going to all that trouble to text him every last ingredient choice, but then i continued to forget the whole time we were eating, the whole way home, it was completely out of my brain FOREVER. and this is after i ordered NOT MORE THAN TWO MINUTES after texting him about his sandwich order.

i’m just lucky that kevin said something about it, because if he hadn’t even mentioned it at all, i’d surely have suddenly remembered at five in the morning, the time i’ve been waking up lately, lying in bed worry about something or other. i might not have remember for a week, or maybe i would never have remembered at all.

REMEMBER THE SANDWICH is now my mantra, trying to keep thoughts in my brain that need to be there. it is a big challenge, but it does give me a goal.

one goal i’ve had all week is YOU MUST VACUUM, which i know is a retarded and pathetic goal for a person to have. even more pathetic, though, is that somehow i have not managed to achieve this relatively simple objective. the tumbleweed-sized balls of pet hair continue to roll across the floor.

ok then.

REMEMBER THE SANDWICH.

mrs. h.

in the (probably not-t0o-distant) future, wearing my red flannel jammies, probably munching on chocolate chips right out of the bag…please, point me in the direction of home. the mind, it is slipping away. not really so gradually. last monday, randy and i went to the feed store –
