feeble and very lame attempts to throw the bread, it landed just a few feet from me and the geese scooted on down closer to the water. finally, though, kevin managed to launch a couple pieces near them, and they started fighting over it.

you can see the one goose eating some of the bread.

i’m sure they had quite a bread feast after we left the yard.

so, this morning…kevin was set to leave for fort shenendoah, VA at 5:15 a.m. – he was going to meet another guy from his…his…platoon? squadron? corps of civil war dudes? i can’t think of the right word. regiment? posse? herd? yes, his herd. anyway, he was going to meet the guy at 5:30 and they were going to caravan.

kevin got up at five and i thought, gee, he must have really REALLY organized well in order to only have 15 small minutes to get ready. i was lying there in bed thinking, i should get up and say goodbye. i knew that he’d come in and say goodbye when he left, but i thought that maybe he’d like the company. would he like the company? i wasn’t sure, since normally when he gets up at six, he’s all alone in that endeavor, except of course for mollie who must eat some food IMMEDIATELY or waste away, and ditto for winnie.

i thought, well, it’s already five after five; i’ll be able to go right back to bed when he leaves.

so i got up and sat at the counter while he ate some cereal and organized stuff and hurried around like a very busy big bee. he said “i want to make some cherry cobbler when i’m there,” so he started putting together the dry ingredients in a bag. at this point it registered somewhere deep in my brain which was almost completely asleep still that i could help him out with this. but that part of my brain wasn’t able to actually reach the motor part of my body and instead i just sat there. he had the cookbook set out on one side of the counter, and the ingredients in the bag way down on the opposite end. i thought, hmm, this would go a lot faster if they were right next to each other…but once again, not able to actually put this into words.

i watched, fascinated yet mostly asleep, as he carefully studied each ingredient, searched for it, measured it out in the bag. i mean, it was kind of painstaking. kevin is a morning person and even though it was REALLY early, i think he was pretty darn awake. so i assume when he makes something, this is how long it takes. i did manage to tell him where a couple things were, because he didn’t know.

later this morning, when i was much more awake, i thought about this time-consuming process of cooking. if i’d been doing it (if i’d been awake), i’d have been flying around, efficiently mixing it all together, it would have been done in no time. this tells me that he needs to do MORE COOKING.

no, not really, it was just funny to watch him doing all that hard work.

then he had to load his cooler and do other important pre-leaving things, and he was finally ready to go at SEVEN. gee, i honestly don’t know how it got to be seven. he said he’d catch up with the caravan guy later maybe, no big deal. he got in the van…and the ignition went click click click. and that’s all. DEAD BATTERY.

he hooked it up to charge and said he had to wait ten minutes. he hurried inside and found one more thing that he’d wanted to bring, and then, at the crack of 7:10, he was off.

i was back in bed asleep by 7:15.

somewhere in all of this mad flurry of activity on his part and sitting there like a zombie lump on my part, i thought about how nice it looks outside in the morning. the light is beautiful and it would be nice to get up early, but i know that’s not usually going to happen. i did manage to take a few pictures.

the ducks all crowded up around the feeder after the geese stepped back because they were scared of something.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-4038" title="m29" very funny-looking and cute. and back in the background is this one lone little gosling. the main group of medium-sized goslings, there are about 20 of them, wasn’t around. i don’t know where this one tiny family came from. they’re new, and they heard the food was delicious here.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone
