{"id":2403,"date":"2009-10-08T09:32:44","date_gmt":"2009-10-08T14:32:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/graceuncensored.com\/WordPress\/?p=2403"},"modified":"2009-10-08T09:32:44","modified_gmt":"2009-10-08T14:32:44","slug":"scotland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/graceuncensored.com\/WordPress\/uncategorized\/scotland\/","title":{"rendered":"scotland!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>i remember that i was going to be so diligent about posting my scotland photos&#8230;and here it is october already.\u00a0 i&#8217;m trying to be a better person, but it&#8217;s just so much work&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>anyway, we biked for five days and then spent our last biking day riding the bus to a castle and then walking to a distillery.<\/p>\n<p>the next day we took the train and the bus to St. Andrews, the home of golf.\u00a0 when we arrived, the place was crawling with tourists.\u00a0 we lumbered along pulling our very heavy suitcases and hated all the tourists.\u00a0 plus there was lots of uneven pavement to scrabble over and we didn&#8217;t enjoy the walk at all.<\/p>\n<p>we got to our b&amp;b after walking for maybe 15 minutes, and nobody was home.\u00a0 hmm.\u00a0 i kept pressing the doorbell hoping that somebody would magically appear, but it didn&#8217;t happen.\u00a0 what were we going to do?\u00a0 i tried going around back, but there was just another house on the other side, and a very very steep hill.<\/p>\n<p>so we waited and every once in a while i rang the bell.<\/p>\n<p>after a while, a guy opened the door.\u00a0 a pleasant-enough english fellow who was a guest there.\u00a0 i know that the b&amp;b policy is that you&#8217;re not supposed to let strangers into the house, but he let us in and said he didn&#8217;t know where the woman&#8230;what was her name?&#8230;was, but we could leave our stuff in the hall and take a key and go out.<\/p>\n<p>we sat in the very fancy living room for a while.\u00a0 it was an indescribably weird feeling, sitting in this very lovely home with nobody around (the guy had gone back to his room).\u00a0\u00a0 this was definitely a much fancier place than any others we stayed in, even though it wasn&#8217;t even rated in the top 10 b&amp;bs in st. andrews on tripadvisor.com.<\/p>\n<p>we looked at the photos strewn around &#8211; old ones of a woman with a soldier, and we guessed this was our host and her now-deceased husband.\u00a0 but maybe not, maybe they&#8217;re divorced, and she got this big fabulous house?<\/p>\n<p>i went upstairs and looked in at the rooms.\u00a0 the one in the front was huge and beautiful and i wished that it would be ours.<\/p>\n<p>we finally decided to leave, so we started walking.\u00a0 the crowds had thinned, and because we weren&#8217;t lugging our suitcases the walk was nice.\u00a0 we came to the ruined cathedral, which was grand and huge and sad.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2423\" title=\"scotland-171\" src=\"https:\/\/graceuncensored.com\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/scotland-171.jpg\" alt=\"scotland-171\" width=\"360\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>it was cool that it was right next to the sea.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2422\" title=\"scotland-172\" src=\"https:\/\/graceuncensored.com\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/scotland-172.jpg\" alt=\"scotland-172\" width=\"540\" height=\"405\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2421\" title=\"scotland-173\" src=\"https:\/\/graceuncensored.com\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/scotland-173.jpg\" alt=\"scotland-173\" width=\"540\" height=\"405\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2420\" title=\"scotland-174\" src=\"https:\/\/graceuncensored.com\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/scotland-174.jpg\" alt=\"scotland-174\" width=\"540\" height=\"405\" \/><\/p>\n<p>we walked out the back gate and looked out at the water.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2419\" title=\"scotland-175\" src=\"https:\/\/graceuncensored.com\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/scotland-175.jpg\" alt=\"scotland-175\" width=\"540\" height=\"405\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2418\" title=\"scotland-176\" src=\"https:\/\/graceuncensored.com\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/scotland-176.jpg\" alt=\"scotland-176\" width=\"540\" height=\"405\" \/><\/p>\n<p>we didn&#8217;t feel like walking way out on that promontory.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2417\" title=\"scotland-177\" src=\"https:\/\/graceuncensored.com\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/scotland-177.jpg\" alt=\"scotland-177\" width=\"540\" height=\"405\" \/><\/p>\n<p>over there on the left is the ruined castle.\u00a0 the only bad thing about walking on the path by the sea is that for most of it, there was a high wall so you couldn&#8217;t see the water.\u00a0 what were they thinking?<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2416\" title=\"scotland-178\" src=\"https:\/\/graceuncensored.com\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/scotland-178.jpg\" alt=\"scotland-178\" width=\"540\" height=\"405\" \/><\/p>\n<p>when we got back, the proprietor was there.\u00a0 jill, her name is jill.\u00a0 she was friendly and very casual about everything and asked us when we wanted breakfast.\u00a0 she lived in a downstairs apartment, and she did give us the beautiful room in the front on the 2nd floor.<\/p>\n<p>here&#8217;s a photo of our room, looking out onto the hallway.\u00a0 the lovely pale green wallpaper was in the bathroom, too.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2415\" title=\"scotland-179\" src=\"https:\/\/graceuncensored.com\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/scotland-179.jpg\" alt=\"scotland-179\" width=\"320\" height=\"427\" \/><\/p>\n<p>scotland is so full of so many beautiful flowers.\u00a0 i have no idea where these were &#8211; were they along the walk through town?\u00a0 or were they outside the living room window?<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2414\" title=\"scotland-180\" src=\"https:\/\/graceuncensored.com\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/scotland-180.jpg\" alt=\"scotland-180\" width=\"360\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>we went out and wandered around, looking for a place for dinner.\u00a0 authentic scottish food was fine, but the air was suddenly filled with the tantalizing aroma of pizza.\u00a0 one a square was a place called Pizza Express and we went in and had the best pizza i&#8217;ve ever eaten.\u00a0 it was casual but delicious, with organic salads and a list of wonderful desserts plus a full bar.\u00a0 very nice.<\/p>\n<p>when we got up the next morning, sunday, we went downstairs for breakfast in the fancy dining room.\u00a0 it had one long table, and the guy we&#8217;d met the day before was there, with his snotty girlfriend.\u00a0 more snooty than snotty.\u00a0 there were in st. andrews for a wedding and really seemed very very bored with everything. we told them that we were going to return to america on the Queen Mary 2, and they said something kind of disparaging about sailing ships.\u00a0 annoying people.\u00a0 a couple of german guys showed up but they didn&#8217;t speak much english.\u00a0 a woman came to take our breakfast order; we&#8217;d just assumed that jill would do that, but she only breezed in for a few minutes.\u00a0 it was a delicious breakfast, but we were happy to get out of there and away from those people.<\/p>\n<p>we set out to see more of st. andrews before taking the bus and the train to edinburgh.\u00a0 because it was relatively early on sunday morning, there weren&#8217;t so many people around.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2413\" title=\"scotland-181\" src=\"https:\/\/graceuncensored.com\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/scotland-181.jpg\" alt=\"scotland-181\" width=\"540\" height=\"405\" \/><\/p>\n<p>we walked to the Old Course, and there were many many golf shops all around.\u00a0 we went into one and there were quite a few people milling around.\u00a0 many very wealthy tourists in St. Andrews.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2412\" title=\"scotland-182\" src=\"https:\/\/graceuncensored.com\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/scotland-182.jpg\" alt=\"scotland-182\" width=\"540\" height=\"405\" \/><\/p>\n<p>there in the distance is the hotel at the old course, and all that green in the foreground is the old course itself.\u00a0 it wasn&#8217;t open, so there were lots of tourists walking around on the green.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2411\" title=\"scotland-183\" src=\"https:\/\/graceuncensored.com\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/scotland-183.jpg\" alt=\"scotland-183\" width=\"540\" height=\"405\" \/><\/p>\n<p>here&#8217;s kevin on the 18th hole, or maybe it was the first hole.\u00a0 many people got their pictures taken here.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2410\" title=\"scotland-184\" src=\"https:\/\/graceuncensored.com\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/scotland-184.jpg\" alt=\"scotland-184\" width=\"540\" height=\"405\" \/><\/p>\n<p>this is the first of many photos we tried to get people to take.\u00a0 we wanted the clubhouse in the background, but people we asked to take the photo had a difficult time managing to to that.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2409\" title=\"scotland-185\" src=\"https:\/\/graceuncensored.com\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/scotland-185.jpg\" alt=\"scotland-185\" width=\"540\" height=\"405\" \/><\/p>\n<p>we went through the golf museum.\u00a0 if you&#8217;re into golf, it must be the most fascinating museum ever.\u00a0 i thought it was pretty neat, but didn&#8217;t linger that long.\u00a0 it&#8217;s funny, though &#8211; there were buses full of tourists walking around the old course, but almost nobody inside the museum.\u00a0 kevin took a few pictures of the display of vintage golf posters.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2408\" title=\"scotland-186\" src=\"https:\/\/graceuncensored.com\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/scotland-186.jpg\" alt=\"scotland-186\" width=\"540\" height=\"405\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2407\" title=\"scotland-187\" src=\"https:\/\/graceuncensored.com\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/scotland-187.jpg\" alt=\"scotland-187\" width=\"540\" height=\"405\" \/><\/p>\n<p>this was the best picture that somebody took.\u00a0 it would have been better to take it horizontally, but at this point we were tired of asking people to take our picture.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2406\" title=\"scotland-188\" src=\"https:\/\/graceuncensored.com\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/scotland-188.jpg\" alt=\"scotland-188\" width=\"360\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>after the morning in st. andrews, we got on the bus to the train to edinburgh.\u00a0 here&#8217;s the view outside the train station.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2405\" title=\"scotland-189\" src=\"https:\/\/graceuncensored.com\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/scotland-189.jpg\" alt=\"scotland-189\" width=\"540\" height=\"405\" \/><\/p>\n<p>and this is the street out b&amp;b was on.\u00a0 it was a quiet street, across from a huge park.\u00a0 people played some kind of golf there &#8211; kevin says it&#8217;s called putt-n-pitch.\u00a0 maybe he&#8217;ll tell you what that involves.\u00a0 there were people playing even when it rained.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2404\" title=\"scotland-190\" src=\"https:\/\/graceuncensored.com\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/scotland-190.jpg\" alt=\"scotland-190\" width=\"540\" height=\"405\" \/><\/p>\n<p>this was the #1 rated b&amp;b in edinburgh, and it did seem very nice.\u00a0 it wasn&#8217;t as fancy as the place in st. andrew, but our hosts were incredibly accomodating.\u00a0 we were in a garden room in the back, with a view of a little patio.\u00a0 there was a decanter of sherry in the room as well as cookies, and we devoured the cookies and polished off the sherry.<\/p>\n<p>we walked up the street to a modest little pub and had a good and cheap dinner.\u00a0 it started raining pretty hard on our way to the restaurant, and we were happy to go inside and get dry.<\/p>\n<p>just like it&#8217;s raining today&#8230;when i got up it was still dark and it hasn&#8217;t gotten much lighter and it&#8217;s supposed to rain rain rain all day long.<\/p>\n<p>it&#8217;s a good thing we&#8217;re not biking today.\u00a0 it would have been DREADFUL to bike in rain all the livelong day.<\/p>\n<p>ok then,<\/p>\n<p>very productive already thursday grace.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>i remember that i was going to be so diligent about posting my scotland photos&#8230;and here it is october already.\u00a0 i&#8217;m trying to be a better person, but it&#8217;s just so much work&#8230;
