JuneCon was a celebration of June’s Journey’s 9th Anniversary. I’ve been playing the game almost since it started. It’s a hidden object game, and the storyline is set in the 20s involving the intrepid detective June, her friend then boyfriend then husband Jack, plus assorted other family, friends and others. June is always working on solving some kind of mystery. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The story is divided into volumes, and they’re up to Volume 10 already. I’m still on Volume 7, because I’m not playing as much as I used to. The story is engaging and the graphics are really top-notch. June lives on an island called Orchid Island and as you progress you can buy decorations for the island with the coins you earn in gameplay. The creators continue to add islands, and I think there are at least six of them now. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can join a team, and when I first started I was on a team that didn’t do much, but now Mom, Amy and Kevin are on my team plus a few friends. We play semi-weekly group competitions and that’s kind of interesting because there are players from all over the world and we compete against them. Some of the players are obviously very competitive and spend a lot of time on the game; I always think that maybe they’re unable to get around for whatever reason. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

June’s Journey is on Facebook and there are several groups that have formed surrounding the game. There’s a whole lot to it, and they’re always adding offshoot challenges, most of which I don’t do, but the game is an enjoyable pursuit. I have always liked decorating my islands; there are all kinds of buildings and plants and things to add, and you can visit other players’ islands, some of which are interestingly decoated and some which are just a hodgepodge of stuff. The game’s parent company, Wooga, is based in Berlin and they’ve had these events before but they’ve always been overseas. I know that last year they had one in Berlin. So when I read that they’d be having it in Chicago I figured we’d better attend, because that might be the only time they travel across the pond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even though we didn’t actually spend that much time at JuneCon, we of course managed to take many pictures. The dressing up part was the funnest part, except that Amy spent so much time helping Mom with her makeup and outfit that she didn’t have so much time to get ready and I was a little bit agitated so it wasn’t quite as fun as it could have been.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event started at 4:00 and it said the doors opened at 3:45 so Amy decided we should leave by 3:45 but that didn’t happen. So, all worked up for no good reason. But look how happy we are in the cab! Maybe the cab ride was the funnest part.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I love it that Mom’s eyes are painted with so much sparkle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

JuneCon took place at a building called Revel Motor Row which was right down Michigan Avenue, farther south than I’d been, and I was a little anxious because there was so much traffic but it cleared up and we got there pretty quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When we arrived, huge banners of June and Jack adorned the front, and I’m mad because I didn’t take a picture. I’d have had to cross the street to get a good one and a homeless man was heading towards us, so instead we went inside. Oh well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once inside we realized that there hadn’t been any need to rush, because not that many people had showed up yet. The first room had life-sized cardboard cutouts of the characters and we had to get our pictures taken with June and Jack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here we are with Mrs. Talbot, the revered older woman in the story and she’s probably younger than me!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We’re with one of the newer characters, a detective named Sandra, and June’s best friend, Amelie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There were props available for people who hadn’t brought their own, including feather headbands and boas. Champagne and canapes were passed around, and I had a sparkling water. After quite a few people showed up, we went into another room where the main event was to take place and I was thrilled to see April from Wooga. She’d been in some videos about the game, and I wish I’d asked her more about what she did. I just looked her up, and she’s the Lead Social Media & Community Manager at Wooga. She’s American and lives in Berlin. That must be exciting! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We also got a picture with Rodrigo, who I’d seen in videos with April. He’s also a Community Manager. The guy on a platform with a video camera is shooting video for the livestream of the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stick-on moustaches were also available, and we availed ourselves of some.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We were promised dinner, and were all pretty hungry, but first there were a few events, including a trivia contest which was also livestreamed out to the world. We had to answer the questions on our phones and they were challenging and we didn’t come close to winning. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

They also had a Q&A, which unfortunately included too many women complaining a lot about things they didn’t like about the game. This went on way too long; one older woman in a wheelchair in particular went on and on almost forever about the stuff she didn’t like about the game. I guess she didn’t know about the concept of free will and not playing anymore. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The final question, or really they were mostly comments, was from some sweet old lady (and most of those in attendance fell into the old lady category) who had started playing when her husband was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and eventually passed away, and she said that the game had given her comfort through all of that. So that was a heartwarming end to the otherwise unfortunate Q&A. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
