Bev and I went to the fair on Monday, August 17th, Senior Day, and had a grand time. We hurried to get there because Bev wanted to see her former tapper group perform; they were scheduled for 9:45. We arrived with time to spare, but then had even more time because the people doing the sound were having many issues to getting the music to play. Eventually it began and I took this picture because it was funny that the couple in the front row, somebody’s children or grandchildren, were filming like crazy. I wonder if they’ll even watch the many photos\/videos they took?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The summer has been mostly miserably hot and humid and we were lucky that it was a lovely and not hot day. In back of us is a giant farm implement but now I realize you can’t see it so well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In years past I’d been looking forward to fair food, but then got so hot that I didn’t feel like eating any. So this year I kept saying to myself, “you MUST get Culler’s fries and a corn dog!” Which, I know, is something a little wacky to lecture yourself about. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But when we finally escaped the Illinois building, there was a Culler’s Fries stand with no line at all and even though it was only about 10:30 in the morning, I ordered some and enjoyed them thoroughly. I offered to share with Bev but she said “You know I don’t eat fried food,” and I realized that it’d be pointless to point out to her that neither did I, and we only went to the fair once a year. So I was forced to eat every delicious fry all by myself. Such a sacrifice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We walked through the Exposition Building and I was in such a hurry that I forgot all about the fun selfie stands that had all kinds of fair and farm and other fun backdrops. Oh well, next year. The Paul Bunyan show started at noon at Conservation World and it was quite a walk. I had to stop and look at the sheep, who are so cute and I’d like to take one home…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And then, the goats, also so cute…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

this was a pen of Pygmy goats, and the really tiny ones are the babies, I think the woman said they were only a month old? She also said that one year they had one who was so small that they brought it inside and it bonded with her dogs and started to think it was a dog and ate dog food and how cute is that???!!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We also stopped in at the stuff going on under the Grandstand, mostly Fair History displays, and I’ve loitered there a lot over the years, but this time, no time, no time….<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We got to Conservation World about ten minutes before the show was about to start and found a perfect hay bale to sit on, in the shade, and a nice breeze was blowing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Paul Bunyan show is incredibly hokey and corny and maybe we’ll skip it next year, although by then I’m pretty sure I’d forget about skipping it. Plus it’s a good opportunity to sit down. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Afterwards I was looking forward to trying some “Old Tyme Ice Cream,” because I figured that if it was really “Old Tyme” it would be delicious. So when we sought it out, I was disappointed that there was no chocolate. I didn’t get any, and we marched on…<\/p>\n\n\n\n
