For me, it was a literal flood. Confusion, yes, but that was all in my brain, the confusion.

Yesterday morning I was naively confident that the day would be calm, and I settled down on a chair on the deck to enjoy a bit of quiet time and my cup of Lapasang Souchong. But alas, it was not to me, as I, being Grace and consistently acting in the opposite manner, somehow knocked the entire cup of tea over, and it was a mighty big cup of tea. It wasn’t boiling hot anymore, but it wasn’t the greatest feeling, as it soaked my nightgown and poured out all over an Ipad. Naturally, I then had to scurry around frantically to set things right.

After awhile I’d fixed myself a second cup and the day proceeded in a pretty decent manner. Except, that is, when I went out into the garage and noticed that Lemondrop, our rotund, sweet and very shy-with-everybody-but Kevin-and-me garage kitty, was acting strangely. She usually wants to sit in our laps and craves attention. When there’s a big thunderstorm, Spot burrows down underneath a shelf in terror but Lemondrop is content to continue eating or maybe even going out the kitty door to watch the storm.

But yesterday she was the one ducking under the shelf, and then hurried out and dove under Kevin’s tool chest, and she kept meowing, which she doesn’t usually do. She stopped to pee in a litter box before finding another place to hide, and I noticed that it looked like there was blood in the urine. Oh boy. I called Laketown, our vet, who said it could be a UTI, but they had no openings that day, and none today, Saturday, and they couldn’t get her in until Wednesday. The front desk woman said we should probably take her to the emergency vet. Oh boy.

I called Sunny, the Cat Whisperer, who has helped us with so many cats over the years starting with Lester and that was in 2011, such a long time ago, and she agreed that Lemondrop should be taken to emergency.

Lemondrop has never been to the vet, only to the APL two years ago when she was still living outside and we managed to trap her in a great big animal trap and after that she joined Spot in the garage, where they’re pretty happy.

We weren’t sure how it would go, trying to convince her to get into a crate. Kevin pulled a massive one out of the basement and proceeded to don long pants, wading boots, and big welding gloves. He said, “Have you ever tried to trap an injured animal?” He was ready for whatever our wild kitty might throw at him.

Luckily it all went much better than we’d anticipated; she was in a box under a workbench and we put the crate in front of the box and Kevin scooped her into it while I quickly shut the door because she was scrambling to get out. Nice that it wasn’t a big deal after all. That was the easy part.

She meowed the entire trip to the Emergency vet, which of course is way across town. Somebody came out and lifted her in, and right away I noticed that it seemed kind of warm inside. A giant freestanding AC unit was pointed at the reception desk, about twice as big as the small one we have in the garage for the kitties. The woman at the front desk said that yes, the AC was down, and had been for a while and it was supposed to be fixed this week but it was already 4:00 on Friday, so it clearly wasn’t happening. They put us in an exam room right away which I thought encouraging, but on my past trips there we’d had to wait a very long time. It was a little warm in there, but they did have a fan blowing.

Poor Lemondrop was huddled in the back of the crate with her eyes closed.

When a tech came in to check her vitals we had to dump her out. And then, weirdly, she was a totally obedient kitty the entire time. I put her on the scale (15.4 lbs) and she continued to lie there while we waited for the next step.

The vet came in and examined her, and the poor kitty continued to be a very good girl. Eventually they took her back and did an x-ray, urinalysis, and blood work. And so I waited, there in the very warm room. I spent at lot of time deleting some of the 1,000+ emails that had collected in myemail folder because I haven’t felt like doing anything with them for a while. I was there long enough to get them down to under a thousand, and sometime after the five the vet came back in. The blood work was fine, but she had bladder stones. You can see them in this x-ray.

She got an antibiotic which will hopefully dissolve them, but if not, she’ll have to have surgery. We finally left close to 6:00 and were both happy to be out of there. At least I was; Lemondrop said nary a word.

But she was quite excited to eat a lot of food when we got home; we have to transition her diet to all Urinary tract, and luckily we already have a bunch of that for Lovey. And that’s that. A much more intense day than I’d planned, but it turned out for the best. Whew. And now it’s 10:26 on Saturday night and I’m very tired after doing a bunch of stuff today, and will be very happy to go to sleep soon, hopefully.

Ok then,

Mrs. Who Knows what Tomorrow Will Bring Hughes.

which I’m reading is actually a political term, whereby someone does a whole bunch of different things in all directions in order to cause confusion.
