<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\nAnother photo of our subway stop, the Franklin Avenue Station. the reason i kept taking photos of it is because a few weeks ago kevin and i started watching a show on Netflix called “Modern Love,” a series of different stories about love in NYC. the very first one has a shot of the lead woman in the episode walking out of this subway stop, and when we watched it i realized that it could be the stop we’d have in brooklyn. and it was. more about the show later…<\/p>\n\n\n\n We were headed over to the Park Slope United Methodist Church, where mom and dad got married in 1959. We took the subway, although we could have walked. I opted for the subway because i had a hunch we’d do plenty of walking that day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And here it is! <\/p>\n\n\n\n The front door was locked so we went around back and knocked, and the woman working there wanted to know why we were there and when we told her, of course she let us in and was joyful about mom’s story of getting married there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n here’s the nice church lady. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Here’s the church as we headed down the street.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Mom and i were then in search of the first apartment she and dad lived in when they moved to New York, after they got married – when they first lived there, i think dad was living at the YMCA and mom at some women’s apartment? she’ll tell me again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n She thought the apartment was either on 8th street or 8th Avenue, but that’s a lot of ground to cover. we walked along 8th street towards the park, and it looked like there was a decent amount of old buildings but also quite a few that just looked old, but were actually new.<\/p>\n\n\n\n mom said that they lived on the fourth floor of a Woolworth mansion, and that it was something like $125 a month, but they only lived there a month or two because it was too expensive! i spent a lot of time looking up woolworth mansions in brooklyn but couldn’t find any.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Prospect Park was only three blocks from the church and it looked lovely, kind of like Central Park but not so crowded. Actually, we saw very few people there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n me at the edge of the park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n i thoroughly enjoyed walking through the park because it was quiet and lovely, although very wet because of all the rain they’d had. massive lake-like puddles in many places. <\/p>\n\n\n\n we got to the north edge of the parkto the grand army plaza, a place i’d looked at on the map so many times but had never seen in person. this is the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Arch on the plaza.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We were headed to the Brooklyn Museum, just up the road, and this is the cool front of the Brooklyn Public Library. now i wish we’d at least have peeked in, but we were getting a little tired from all the walking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n and as we walked a block to the Brooklyn Museum, i was delighted to see this building – it’s the building where the woman in “Modern Love” lived. I was surprised to see it because it’d looked it up online and couldn’t find it anywhere. <\/p>\n\n\n\n So the couple on the show wouldn’t have gotten out at our subway stop in real life, but of course i’m sure the inside of the apartment isn’t the same place as the facade. but was pretty cool to spot it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We spent a fair amount of time at the brooklyn museum…photos coming soon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n ok then,<\/p>\n\n\n\n mrs. whew xmas is over hughes.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" On Wednesday dec. 11 we left our place in Brooklyn at the crack of 11:30. here’s the front of the building.
