{"id":15150,"date":"2017-06-29T20:07:05","date_gmt":"2017-06-30T01:07:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/graceuncensored.com\/WordPress\/?p=15150"},"modified":"2017-06-29T20:09:43","modified_gmt":"2017-06-30T01:09:43","slug":"lots-of-doors-at-abraham-lincolns-new-salem","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/graceuncensored.com\/WordPress\/uncategorized\/lots-of-doors-at-abraham-lincolns-new-salem\/","title":{"rendered":"lots of doors at Abraham Lincoln&#8217;s New Salem"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>last saturday night i went to see a musical at the outdoor theater at New Salem. \u00a0it was a perfect evening, and beforehand i took a little time to walk through the village.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re not from around here, New Salem is where Lincoln lived for six years before moving to Springfield when he was elected to the IL General Assembly. \u00a0While in New Salem, he was a storekeeper, postmaster, surveyor, plus he served in the Black Hawk War. \u00a0The state historic site is a \u00a0reconstructed village, and i&#8217;ve come to this spot through the years for as long as i can remember. \u00a0I love it &#8211; it&#8217;s quiet and peaceful (well, probably not when there are busloads of school children), and there&#8217;s a wonderful smell to the place &#8211; not just the smell of campfires (the park has a campground), but maybe it&#8217;s the smell of all the logs.<\/p>\n<p>When kevin and i were practicing hiking before our trip to wales two years ago we went to new salem several times to hike the paths all around the park. \u00a0on one particularly hot day we ended up in the village and were happy to spend a little time in the air-conditioned museum store.<\/p>\n<p>i&#8217;m pretty sure this is the first time i&#8217;ve been to new salem wearing dangly earrings. \u00a0i don&#8217;t know why i felt the need to get dressed up; the vast majority of others attending the show wore jeans and t-shirts.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15151\" src=\"https:\/\/graceuncensored.com\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/j14.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"405\" srcset=\"https:\/\/graceuncensored.com\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/j14.jpg 540w, https:\/\/graceuncensored.com\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/j14-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>i love this tiny little house &#8211; since i was pressed for time i didn&#8217;t have a chance to dash over and read the sign in front of it, so i can&#8217;t say what it was used for. \u00a0mother in law cottage? B&amp;B?<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15152\" src=\"https:\/\/graceuncensored.com\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/j15.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"405\" srcset=\"https:\/\/graceuncensored.com\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/j15.jpg 540w, https:\/\/graceuncensored.com\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/j15-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>all but one of these homes were reconstructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Depression in 1934.<\/p>\n<p>This place belonged to the village cooper. \u00a0He made all kinds of buckets, tubs and barrels in his cooper shop next door &#8211; back then, almost all produce was shipped in barrels. \u00a0there&#8217;s all kinds of interesting info like that on new salem&#8217;s website. There were wet barrels, for whiskey and meat shipped in brine, and dry barrels for corn meal, beans or flour. It&#8217;s amazing to think of how far we&#8217;ve come, shipping-wise, isn&#8217;t it?<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15153\" src=\"https:\/\/graceuncensored.com\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/j16.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"405\" srcset=\"https:\/\/graceuncensored.com\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/j16.jpg 540w, https:\/\/graceuncensored.com\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/j16-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>the blackmith shop.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15154\" src=\"https:\/\/graceuncensored.com\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/j17.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"405\" srcset=\"https:\/\/graceuncensored.com\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/j17.jpg 540w, https:\/\/graceuncensored.com\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/j17-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>the man who lived here was a hatter, and the pot out in front was used for making felt. \u00a0i wonder how one makes felt. \u00a0they probably don&#8217;t do it in a big pot anymore.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15155\" src=\"https:\/\/graceuncensored.com\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/j18.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"405\" srcset=\"https:\/\/graceuncensored.com\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/j18.jpg 540w, https:\/\/graceuncensored.com\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/j18-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This is a carding mill, used to spin wool into fabric. \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.illinoiswindmills.org\/new-salem-carding-mill\">This site<\/a>\u00a0has some interesting information about it, including this passage:<\/p>\n<p><em>At the site of Lincoln\u2019s New Salem settlement stands a working replica of an animal-powered mill for spinning wool into fabric. \u00a0Although the machine is not original, it is the only one of its kind in the country, and one of just three in the world.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>one of three in the world! That&#8217;s pretty neat &#8211; we don&#8217;t have a lot of unique things hereabouts, and sometime i&#8217;ll have to take a picture of the treadmill in back of the mill where oxen had to turn the giant wheel to power it. \u00a0i know i&#8217;ve seen it in operation before, and maybe they&#8217;ll be doing it again sometime soon.<\/p>\n<p>but what about that second-story door? \u00a0it&#8217;d be a mighty big step to the ground. \u00a0maybe they pulled wagons underneath and&#8230;.baled stuff down?<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15156\" src=\"https:\/\/graceuncensored.com\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/j19.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"405\" srcset=\"https:\/\/graceuncensored.com\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/j19.jpg 540w, https:\/\/graceuncensored.com\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/j19-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This is the first store of Lincoln&#8217;s. \u00a0I included a close-up of the sign over the door; if you can&#8217;t read it, it basically says that this is Lincoln&#8217;s first store, in partnership with a fellow named Berry.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15157\" src=\"https:\/\/graceuncensored.com\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/j20.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"405\" srcset=\"https:\/\/graceuncensored.com\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/j20.jpg 540w, https:\/\/graceuncensored.com\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/j20-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15158\" src=\"https:\/\/graceuncensored.com\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/j21.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"405\" srcset=\"https:\/\/graceuncensored.com\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/j21.jpg 540w, https:\/\/graceuncensored.com\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/j21-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Sometimeswhen i went to New Salem as a kid a lot of these places were open, with historic interpreters inside doing whatever 1830&#8217;s-type thing needed to be done. \u00a0on the new salem website i now only find this activity taking place at their fall festival on october 28th and 29th. \u00a0hmm, i&#8217;d better put that down on the calendar.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15159\" src=\"https:\/\/graceuncensored.com\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/j22.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"405\" srcset=\"https:\/\/graceuncensored.com\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/j22.jpg 540w, https:\/\/graceuncensored.com\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/j22-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>i had to take a picture of this sign because it says that the store was owned by a man named Hill and a man named McNamar &#8211; my friend Bev accompanied me to New Salem, and as i was rushing around taking pictures she was dousing herself with bug spray. \u00a0she felt that it wasn&#8217;t adequate protection, though, and i could see her way off in the distance and she looked&#8230;funny, somehow. \u00a0when i walked back i realized she had tried to thoroughly insulate herself from any potential west nile-ridded mosquitoes that might be lurking.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15167\" src=\"https:\/\/graceuncensored.com\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/j30.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"405\" srcset=\"https:\/\/graceuncensored.com\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/j30.jpg 540w, https:\/\/graceuncensored.com\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/j30-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>i showed the picture to kevin, who said that she looked like beavis from &#8220;beavis &amp; butthead,&#8221; when he was being &#8220;cornholio.&#8221; \u00a0if you ever watched the show, you&#8217;ll know what he&#8217;s talking about. \u00a0Beavis pulled his t-shirt over his head when he became &#8220;cornholio,&#8221; and his shirt was even blue.<\/p>\n<p>but i digress&#8230;new salem is wonderful place to visit, and you should check it out if you&#8217;re ever in the neighborhood.<\/p>\n<p>their address is &#8220;15588 History Lane,&#8221;
