{"id":11802,"date":"2011-08-28T09:30:59","date_gmt":"2011-08-28T09:30:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/graceuncensored.com\/WordPress\/?p=11802"},"modified":"2011-08-28T09:30:59","modified_gmt":"2011-08-28T09:30:59","slug":"day-8-sunday-august-28th","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/graceuncensored.com\/WordPress\/uk-2011\/day-8-sunday-august-28th\/","title":{"rendered":"DAY 8: SUNDAY, AUGUST 28th"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;When I get older, losing my hair, many years from now&#8230;we can rent a cottage on the Isle of Wight, if it&#8217;s not too dear&#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Do you remember that part of &#8220;When I&#8217;m 64?&#8221;\u00a0 i love that song, and when i was trying to plan for our trip, i became overwhelmed with the many possibilities of places we could visit.\u00a0 i kept writing to our friend Carol and asking her her opinion on different places, and one place i mentioned was the isle of wight.<\/p>\n<p>I decided that we wouldn&#8217;t go there after all, because there wasn&#8217;t time, plus we weren&#8217;t renting a car so it wouldn&#8217;t be so easy to get to.<\/p>\n<p>And then, when we arrived at carol and alan&#8217;s house, they told us that they had planned a trip to the isle of wight!\u00a0 since they were already driving us to portsmouth\/southampton, they decided we could take a day trip over to the isle of wight, on the wight ferry.<\/p>\n<p>This was our last full day in England, and it was a fun way to spend it.<\/p>\n<p>here&#8217;s the backyard of the lovely b&amp;b we stayed at, the Heather Gables.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8260\" title=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/graceuncensored.com\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/191.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"405\" \/><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>there were a couple of deer in the empty yard next door.\u00a0 the deer looked scrawnier than the deer around here.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8261\" title=\"192\" src=\"https:\/\/graceuncensored.com\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/192.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"405\" \/><\/p>\n<p>here we are, on the Wight Ferry, leaving Portsmouth for the Isle of Wight.\u00a0 in the video you can see a lot more of the journey because for some reason i felt the need to do a lot of videotaping.\u00a0 it was such a beautiful day.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8262\" title=\"193\" src=\"https:\/\/graceuncensored.com\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/193.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"405\" \/><\/p>\n<p>here&#8217;s a photo of the Spinnaker Tower &#8211; this should be in a travel brochure for the place, i think.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8264\" title=\"195\" src=\"https:\/\/graceuncensored.com\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/195.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>as we sailed past portsmouth, there was a big kite festival going on at an amusement park.\u00a0 i have more video than this, including a huge smurf balloon.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8263\" title=\"194\" src=\"https:\/\/graceuncensored.com\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/194.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"405\" \/><\/p>\n<p>we saw a few scooters getting on the wight ferry, and then more when we got to the island.\u00a0 there was a huge scooter rally, it turns out.\u00a0 they all seemed to be heading to the town of Rye, one of the first that we drove through.\u00a0 i have some footage of the scooters whizzing along the road.<\/p>\n<p>we didn&#8217;t really stop, though, til we got to the little town of Shanklin.\u00a0 lovely little place.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8265\" title=\"196\" src=\"https:\/\/graceuncensored.com\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/196.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"405\" \/><\/p>\n<p>there were lots of people on the beach, swimming, sunbathing, kayaking&#8230;i can&#8217;t exactly remember the temperature that day, but i don&#8217;t think it was super warm.\u00a0 the english, though, they&#8217;re very hardy.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8266\" title=\"197\" src=\"https:\/\/graceuncensored.com\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/197.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"405\" \/><\/p>\n<p>here&#8217;s a panorama shot that kevin took as we drove along the south coast.\u00a0 it was all so beautiful.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8267\" title=\"198\" src=\"https:\/\/graceuncensored.com\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/198.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"560\" height=\"135\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8268\" title=\"199\" src=\"https:\/\/graceuncensored.com\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"405\" \/><\/p>\n<p>funny, that they have palm trees.\u00a0 it could be florida, or california.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8269\" title=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/graceuncensored.com\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"405\" \/><\/p>\n<p>we were going to have dinner at carol and alan&#8217;s daughter&#8217;s house that night, and i realized it would be good to bring a bottle of wine or two.\u00a0 we stopped at a little wine shop in the town of Ventnor, and they happened to be having a wine tasting, which was lucky.\u00a0 carol and i went in, and the shopkeeper was kind of busy, and he told us to JUST HELP OURSELVES.\u00a0 have you ever, ever been at a wine-tasting where they told you that?\u00a0 nope, me neither.<\/p>\n<p>so carol and i did help ourselves, filling our glasses to the top.\u00a0 alan and kevin were waiting out in the car, but kevin poked his head in to take this picture.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8270\" title=\"201\" src=\"https:\/\/graceuncensored.com\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/201.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"405\" \/><\/p>\n<p>we stopped at a couple of other places, including a glass-blowing shop, and a little very touristy town called godshill.\u00a0 tour buses were pouring into godshill, and we walked around a little bit but there were too many crowds, plus it was drizzling at that point.<\/p>\n<p>i don&#8217;t think carol and alan had been to the isle of wight in 20 years, and one place they had loved was called the needles.\u00a0 it&#8217;s a row of chalk formations on the tip of the island, and here&#8217;s what wikipedia has to say about them:<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>The Needles<\/strong> is a row of three distinctive <a title=\"Stack (geology)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stack_%28geology%29\">stacks<\/a> of <a title=\"Chalk\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chalk\">chalk<\/a> that rise out of the <a title=\"Sea\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sea\">sea<\/a> off the western extremity of the <a title=\"Isle of Wight\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Isle_of_Wight\">Isle of Wight<\/a>, England, close to <a title=\"Alum Bay\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alum_Bay\">Alum Bay<\/a>. The Needles <a title=\"Lighthouse\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lighthouse\">lighthouse<\/a> stands at the end of the formation. Built in 1859, it has been automated since 1994.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The formation takes its name from the former fourth needle-shaped pillar called <a title=\"Lot (biblical)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lot_%28biblical%29\">Lot&#8217;s<\/a> Wife that used to stand in its midst until it collapsed in a storm in 1764.<sup id=\"cite_ref-2\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Needles#cite_note-2\">[3]<\/a><\/sup> The remaining rocks are all short and squat and not at all needle-like, but the name has stuck.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I think that&#8217;s funny about the name, especially since the needle-shaped pillar collapsed in 1764!<\/p>\n<p>the needles are way off there in the distance.\u00a0 you can only get to them by little tourist boats.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"203\" src=\"https:\/\/graceuncensored.com\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/203.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"405\" \/><\/p>\n<p>and here&#8217;s a huge hill of heather.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8271\" title=\"202\" src=\"https:\/\/graceuncensored.com\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/202.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"405\" \/><\/p>\n<p>here&#8217;s a closer shot of the needles, with the lighthouse at the end.\u00a0 we did finally see them the next day when we were leaving southampton on the QM2, and i have some sort of fuzzy video of it.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8273\" title=\"204\" src=\"https:\/\/graceuncensored.com\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/204.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"405\" \/><\/p>\n<p>unfortunately, the area has changed a lot since carol and alan were last there.\u00a0 now there&#8217;s a carnival with all kinds of rides and food and stuff, and a huge, huge car park that was pretty filled up when we went.<\/p>\n<p>they said that when they went there before, they could walk down the cliffs and the chalk had settled into different-colored ribbons, and was beautiful.\u00a0 i guess that&#8217;s not allowed anymore because of the erosion.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8274\" title=\"205\" src=\"https:\/\/graceuncensored.com\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/205.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"405\" \/><\/p>\n<p>we didn&#8217;t linger at the needles, but instead hurried through the middle of the island to get to the Osborne House, which carol and alan had bought tickets for.\u00a0 the Osborne House was built by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, as a summer house, and Queen Victoria loved it there.<\/p>\n<p>they thought the palace was open until six, but it actually closed at 5.\u00a0 we got there at 4:15.\u00a0 not a lot of time to tour the place, so we basically sprinted through the rooms &#8211; they were nice, but most of them weren&#8217;t so lavish, except for the fabulous Durbar Room at the very end, which was built to look Indian.\u00a0 Fabulous.<\/p>\n<p>here&#8217;s a photo of it that i found online:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8298\" title=\"durbar room\" i&#8217;d have liked, but since we&#8217;d hurried through the other rooms we did get to look at things in detail a little. in the cases are gifts that victoria received for her golden and diamond jubilees&#8230;i wonder if queen elizabeth will have such a grand place for showing off the gifts she got from her jubilees.<\/p>\n<p>we did get to spend more time in the gardens, which i really loved.\u00a0 i took lots of video and photos, and kevin took lots of photos.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8275\" title=\"206\" width=\"540\" height=\"304\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Victoria and Albert&#8217;s children made the bricks for this fort.\u00a0\u00a0 They had nine kids, and they tried to have them learn things outside of the royal life.\u00a0 i bet none of them became bricklayers, though.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8293\" title=\"224\" src=\"https:\/\/graceuncensored.com\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/224.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"405\" \/><\/p>\n<p>i describe this in the video &#8211; it&#8217;s victoria&#8217;s bathing cottage.\u00a0 she&#8217;d go in the little room to change into her bathing suit, and servants would wheel the whole thing down into the water and she&#8217;d be able to discreetly slip into the water without anybody seeing her.\u00a0 apparently this was a common thing for 19th century fine ladies.\u00a0 a curtain was drawn all around the whole thing so she wouldn&#8217;t be seen.\u00a0 this doesn&#8217;t seem like the most fun way to swim, really.\u00a0 but on the other hand, i&#8217;m kind of in favor of those old-fashioned bathing costumes that were basically dresses with stockings.\u00a0 i could do without the stockings, but i would not be opposed to wearing a dress instead of a bathing suit.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8294\" title=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/graceuncensored.com\/WordPress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"405\" \/><\/p>\n<p>after our exciting visit to the osborne house we spent some time in the gift shop.\u00a0 they had samples of damson liqueur, which is like sloe gin, only made with english damson berries.\u00a0 i had a sample, then i bought a bottle.\u00a0 i just opened it a couple of weeks ago, and i&#8217;d have a drink right now if it wasn&#8217;t the middle of the day and i still have to go to zumba tonight.\u00a0 we bought many other souvenirs, too, then made our way back to the ferry.<\/p>\n<p>as we sailed back to portsmouth we saw this ship.\u00a0 it looked a lot like the queen mary, and in the video you can hear me prattling on about how it&#8217;s definitely the queen mary.\u00a0 it&#8217;s not, though, it&#8217;s the queen elizabeth, and she&#8217;s heading out to sea.\u00a0 i think the queen mary probably docked in southampton on monday morning, not on sunday.\u00a0 it&#8217;s neat, though, and does give you an idea of what our ship looked like &#8211; that&#8217;s the thing, when you&#8217;re on it, you never get this magnificent view of it.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8295\" title=\"226\"
