for some reason, in the midst of the many many photos he’s been sending me from colorado springs, kevin sent me this photo.

i guess it must have been on there for a long time and he needed to delete it in order to take more photos.
it was almost one year ago that jim and i were sitting in the back of the van, in charge of making sure the cake DID NOT CRASH as kevin crept along the highway. i’m sure i mentioned it a long time ago but i’m sure you forgot - first, we got stopped by a cop on the highway because kevin was going too slowly. and later, on hazel dell road, which is riddled with potholes, i yelled at him SLOW DOWN and he replied I’M ONLY GOING THREE MILES AN HOUR.
it was a slightly stressful morning, that wedding day. but the cake arrived safely and all was good.
we saved the top layer and are going to eat it in a little over a month. i wonder if it’ll still be any good? i bet it will.
i was EATEN ALIVE BY MOSQUITOES tonight at randy’s. aside from that, he made a very lovely dinner and we took a walk on the new short trail on east lake drive and mollie enjoyed that a lot, but we were just too close to the cars zooming along for my taste.
it’s still very muggy here. this morning the humidity was 90%. a little bit moist around here.
that’s why i got up at 7:30 to go jogging. i said to myself,ok, get up and run, and then you can take a nap later.
i didn’t nap. i don’t have any good reason for not napping, except i wasn’t tired.
but so now i’m ready to go to sleep. at 10:43 saturday night.
sleep is good. there was a billboard in LA that read YOU CAN SLEEP WHEN YOU’RE DEAD. it was an ad for a gym, i believe. i hated that billboard. I WANT TO SLEEP RIGHT NOW. DON’T TELL ME TO SLEEP WHEN I’M DEAD. sleep is very good.
also, today mom and i stopped at the dairy queen and had dilly bars. mine had MINT ice cream inside. i know i said there are no more dairy queens in springfield, but there is one in sherman, which is sort of just right up the road, and we weren’t too far from it anyway.
sleep is good, ice cream is good. my wants are few.
ok then,
saturday grace.

It’s already early evening and i’ve managed to avoid setting off the car alarm all the livelong day.
not to mention the fact that i haven’t dropped and broken anything, nor have i cut myself with any sharp objects.
a good day, indeed.
for me. right now.
mollie and i are about to go to randy’s for dinner and she get to GO IN THE CAR which will make her very excited. isn’t it funny, a dog’s life..she’s lying in bed right now, no idea at all what will happen next, but boy is she going to be very happy very soon.
wait, she just got up. her ESP must be working.
we’ll sit in the back yard at randy’s because he has cats WHO REALLY REALLY HATE DOGS.
mollie will be happy as long as i never ever go inside.
ok then,
grace.

here’s kevin with his roommates at fencing coaches college. one of the guys in in foil class with him, but i think the other guy is in sabre. something different, anyway. one of them is a pastor and one is an english professor. somewhere. teaching the english. with the spelling and capitalizations all over the place and all.
one of them is older than kevin, and one is younger. i can’t remember where they’re from.
wouldn’t it be weird to eat all your meals with a room full of OLYMPIC ATHLETES? because the coaches college is at the olympic training center. and so you’d be sitting there trying to eat a french fry and you’d look up and there would be a bunch of COMPLETELY UTTERLY FIT people all over the place. i think i would just eat salads.
perhaps this is the answer to the obesity epidemic in the world. everybody needs to have at least one olympic athlete to eat with, all the time. SHAME US INTO HEALTH. that could be the tag line for the advertising campaign.
ok again,
grace

...i finished #7 at 11:13 p.m. last night. now what will i do? i’ve decided to go back and start at the beginning, #1.
basically, since i last wrote, i’ve been trying to find any spare minute to read HP. last night i decided that i HAD TO FINISH IT. so i did.
i just won’t say anything at all about it. i don’t want to ruin it for you.
the other night on the way to rehearsal i was talking to kevin on the phone and i mentioned the name of one of the characters who got killed to him and i was i Bev’s car at the time and she said NOW YOU’VE RUINED IT FOR ME.
i had no idea she was reading it. i felt HORRIBLE. so now, my lips are sealed.
kevin finished it the other night. a few nights ago. i haven’t wanted to ask him anything about it, but last night it was driving me crazy, this one point in the book, and i called and asked him about it and he TOTALLY GAVE SOMETHING AWAY.
but it ended up not being such a big deal. especially because i went home and finished it.
i saw at least three people reading it at rehearsal the other night.
surely there’s been another book that everybody seems to be reading at the same time? i don’t know what that might be. probably plenty of them.
christine would know. christine reads plenty of books.
i used to read lots of books.
now it’s just the one. well, the series, anyway.
bev and karen and michael and i all ride together to rehearsals. it’s fun, except sometime slightly frightening when we’re driving home at night out in the country in the dark and there are DEER EVERYWHERE. lounging at the side of the road, riding bicycles as well as unicycles along the sidewalk.
i actually haven’t seen any deer at all. but somebody drives and somebody else WATCHES OUT FOR THE DEER. except the other night somebody said, “oh, there’s one back there.”
BACK THERE! WHAT GOOD IS “BACK THERE” GOING TO DO?" the deer was long gone; if it had decided to jump right into our car, it would be there already. you’re supposed to see it BEFORE IT REACHES THE CAR.
luckily i wasn’t driving.
one time i was driving home late at night from champaign illinois with randy and we got closer to home and he started telling me all these back roads to take, and i had no idea where we were, and it was very very dark and also i think snowy, and he kept saying it was a short cut. but he also said THERE ARE LOTS OF DEER OUT HERE. and then he proceeded to start HONKING THE HORN. AS I WAS DRIVING.
that was a little unnerving. but once again, we spotted no deer. this time, of course, it’s because they were all highly annoyed that somebody was driving down the road honking at them.
the other night i suggested that before rehearsal we stop by the dairy queen. see, there’s NO MORE DAIRY QUEENS in springfield. horrible. but there is one in petersbug, and we’re rehearsing right up the road at new salem, and i always want a dilly bar.
everybody thought this was a good idea, because i truly think there must be something wrong with you if you don’t like ice cream. i mean, not that you’re a horrible person or anything. probably. but i don’t know...
they decided to go last night before rehearsal.
I DIDN’T HAVE TO GO TO REHEARSAL LAST NIGHT.
AND IT WAS MY IDEA.
they allege we’re going to go back to dairy queen on monday. WE BETTER.
actually, i think it’s my turn to drive monday night. which means we’ll go for sure.
mollie got two walks this evening, which made her happy. also, today i gave her a stale marshmallow because she likes them because they’re food...although she actually likes many things that aren’t food. but she really likes food-like things, and a stale marshmallow is pretty chewy.
i went to dinner and when i got home the bag of stale marshmallows was lying on the bedroom floor. there didn’t appear to be any missing, except one was lying on the floor.
she must have decided they were too much effort, all the chewing. but she was quite excited to have stolen them from the kitchen cupboard and carried them off into the bedroom. her tropy.
at least it wasn’t a live animal.
she has done this before, with dog treats, but the treats are almost always all gone. does that mean that dog treats taste better than marshmallows? stale marshmallows, anyway?
i guess i really don’t want to find out.
yesterday i set the car alarm off about three times. one time i was in a building and it went off.
clearly it’s some kind of karmic disarray sort of thing.
ok ok ok,
grace

of THE DEATHLY HALLOWS. BOOK NUMBER SEVEN. WHAT WILL I DO WHEN IT’S OVER?
sleep, for one thing.
it arrived in the mail on saturday, and i helped kevin with his whirlwind of packing for fencing coaches college in colorago springs, CO, at the olympic training center. much craziness, many things that he had to find, lots and lots of rushing around, including a trip to the store to buy snacks for his train trip...
while buying many things, we decided to buy another copy of Harry Potter #7 so that he could read one while he’s away and so could i.
he finally got out the door, only a hour later than he’d planned on leaving. i read about 10 pages then and there, but then had other things to do.
saturday night, though, i started in earnest. i kept reading and couldn’t stop until about one in the morning, and then i was lying in bed but couldn’t sleep so i got up at two and read for another hour.
sunday, a very sluggish day. by the time i went to bed, though, i was finally more awake, and started reading earlier. i was going to go to sleep AT MIDNIGHT, but i kept reading till one thirty. not as bad as saturday night.
the book is about 760 pages, and now i’m up to 580, i think. last night i somehow forced myself to stop at midnight, because today i have a very busy work day.
i rushed out the door this morning, set off my car alarm and had left the car keys inside and had to go in through the garage and it was all very frantic until i sat there and remembered i didn’t have to leave for a half hour. whew.
i’m trying to sit here quietly.
here’s a photo kevin sent from his phone, of the olympic training village. it looks very nice, as one would expect of an olympic training village.

here’s one in front of the fencing place.

he got there on sunday but didn’t have to do anything till yesterday afternoon, so in the morning he went to pike’s peak with his two roommates. he sent me a photo of the dorm room he’s sleeping in, and said it was nice, but it looked more like a prison to me.

i have a photo of kevin on top of pike’s peak, but for some reason it’s just not posting right, so i have to try to do that later. after work, after going to rehearsal, before i start in again on harry.
ok, hopefully i won’t set off any more alarms this morning. in addition to the general chaos, mollie is going berserk because the meter-reader man is in the neighborhood so she’s been barking nonstop for quite a while now.

tonight kevin informed me that i haven’t written in SIX WHOLE days. where has the time gone? what have i been doing?
well, we saw “harry potter” last wednesday, the day it opened. it was GREAT. not as good as the book, but really good. and BOOK SEVEN, the final book, is coming out on saturday and kevin tells me it’s going to arrive at our house that very day.
by owl, maybe?
i decided i’d better re-read book six, and so i started that on monday, and finished yesterday, and then decided that it couldn’t hurt to re-read book five as well. but i don’t think i’ll finish it before saturday, but that’s ok. I LOVE HARRY POTTER. it’s nice to like a children’s book that other adults also like. because i’ve always liked children’s books, but usually i don’t mention it because i’m not a child.
at the library this week i checked out a couple of my favorite children’s books because i decided maybe i should try to write one. because ms. rowling did it and it worked out pretty well for her, didn’t it? at the very least, i can re-read some of my favorite books.
speaking of thing childlike, we also saw “transformers,” that’s right, the movie BASED ON A HASBRO TOY. that’s what it said, right up there on the screen, and i can’t think of other movies based on toys. except we sat through a horrendous trailer for a movie called “bratz,” based on the annoying-looking dolls of the same name, so now maybe all movies will be based on toys.
a few years ago i wrote about movies being based on theme-park rides, after seeing the very first “pirates of the caribbean,” and i guess this is the natural progression. what’s next, i wonder? movies based on breakfast cereals? the captain crunch movie? Uh oh, i hope nobody reads that and STEALS MY GREAT IDEA.
do they still make captain crunch? it’s one of the many many sugar cereals i was deprived of as a kid. i’m almost positive they don’t have Count Chocula anymore, and i never even got to try it. for some reason, though, sometimes mom bought Super Sugar Crisp, and i think that might still be around, except they changed the name to the more politically correct Super GOLDEN crisp. oh, it’s made of GOLD, not sugar, not to worry.
rehearsals are going pretty well. i’ve had to go to three so far, and so far i continue to saunter and sashay but mostly i sit around and read harry potter. i know i could join in singing the big numbers that are being performed onstage, but does anybody really want my voice added to the mix? doubtful.
“transformers” was really good, by the way. i’m not exactly sure why we went to see it, but it was so surprisingly good. hokey at times, but it was so entertaining and fun and jam-packed with excitement. two thumbs up from me.
i have to go now, because i want to make a bigger dent in HP#5 before i go to sleep.
i hope your summer is going well.
ok then,
wednesday grace.

you might recall that i mentioned i’m going to be in “li'l abner” at new salem’s outdoor theater this summer. it was a little hard for me to remember this because i haven’t had to rehearse and haven’t had to rehearse...they started practice a few weeks ago, but last night was my very first night. it went well; we blocked and ran through two of the five scenes i’m in, and all i had to do was sashay around and deliver my few lines. i tried not to have my usual minnie mouse voice, but instead something a little deeper and sexy, like marilyn monroe in “some like it hot.” maybe i’ll buy that movie so i can watch it again, not to mention that it’s a classically funny film.
i bought the dvd for li'l abner online for a measly five bucks, but it hasn’t arrived yet. i also purchased “finian’s rainbow,” because that was the movie listed that people who bought “li'l abner” also bought. i saw “finian’s rainbow” when i was a kid and i have a vague memory of liking it, but it’ll be interesting to see what i think of it now. it was directed by francis ford coppola, his very first movie, and the only musical he directed. here’s what they say about the movie on amazon.com:
**Amazon.com video review: A funny thing happened to Finian’s Rainbow in between its debut as a Broadway musical in 1947 and its appearance as a film in 1968. After 21 years, its theme of racial tension in the American South was no longer cutting edge, and the fact that its heroes are a group of sharecroppers called the Rainbow Valley Tobacco Cooperative dates it even further. Add a number of subplots and the heavy hand of a 29-year-old Francis Ford Coppola directing his first and only musical, and the two-and-a-half-hour running time feels bloated. Hermes Pan (best known for the classic Astaire-Rogers movies) is credited with choreographing the overbusy musical numbers, but he was reportedly overruled by Coppola at every turn. Still, there is a lot to enjoy in this movie, most notably Fred Astaire in his last lead role in a musical. Fred plays Finian McLonergan, an Irishman who has traveled to America in hopes of planting a pilfered pot of gold near Fort Knox and watching it grow. Even at 69, Fred shows he is still capable of a sprightly step and warbling “Look to the Rainbow.” Another plus is the casting of '60s pop icon Petula Clark as his daughter, as she sings with an unaffected loveliness. Finally, the score by Burton Lane and E.Y. Harburg includes two of the best Broadway songs ever written–"Old Devil Moon" and “How Are Things in Glocca Morra?”–as well as the comic ditty “When I’m Not Near the Girl I Love.” –David Horiuchi
hmm.
my character in “li'l abner” is Impassionata Von Climax, a vamp. my boss/sugar daddy, general bullmoose, sicks me on li'l himself, in order to steal his Yocumberry tonic. last night i started thinking about how odd it is that i get cast in roles like this; my character in “noises off” was also a vamp, or maybe more of a tramp, plus i had to wear the very skimpy costume in that one. but i was also supposed to be the sexy, albeit comic, babe.
the thing is that i’m just so not a babe, in any way, despite what my sweet husband will say about me. but i guess i can fool people into thinking i’m one, by shimmying and batting my eyes and acting like i’m the cat’s meow. sort of a caricature of what a femme fatale might be.
when i was in junior high, and i hate to bring that period in my life up at all because i prefer to pretend it never happened, i was the bookish, chubby, acned, dorky, geeky, very unattractive girl. boys absolutely didn’t pay any attention to me. as i got older some of my more unattractive elements went away, but i’ve never been a person who turns heads. so i think it’s funny that i get cast in these roles, because i can pretend to be a knockout. sashaying around.
but not too much sashaying - i only had the one night of rehearsal this week, and then two nights next week, and three nights the week after that. kevin and i did this play because we thought it’d be great to be in something together (besides our scintillating performances as the king and queen in the ballet “sleeping beauty,” where we were awesome at the strutting around and sitting down for long periods of time), but we haven’t been to rehearsal together yet. and i don’t think we will for a few weeks now, because after next week he goes away to fencing coaches college in colorado for almost two weeks and by the time he gets back there will only be a week and a half before the play starts. but THEN, finally, we’ll be in the play together.
except never in the same scenes.
the other day mom went to lunch with some friends, including her friend kellie who is moving to wichita kansas very soon, and kellie told mom she reads this every day! that makes me want to be better about writing more. thanks for reading, kellie, and i hope you have a great time in wichita.
ok then,
very sultry grace.

this just in, a story in the indian paper “hindu,” they executed china’s former top food & drug safety guy. he was corrupt. yes, they KILLED HIM. i know that all the poor people who lost a pet because of the tainted food from china are saying ALL RIGHT!
hmm, what if they started executing people here who were corrupt? tell me, would there be anybody left to be in charge of things? doubtful.

it’s not the heat, IT’S THE HUMIDITY. makes me want to stay inside. this is the first summer ever where i feel that i don’t like summer. TOO HUMID.
yesterday morning mollie was sniffing something on the bedroom floor - IT WAS A LIVE DOVE. honey the very bad kitty was meowing outside the door, afraid to come into the bedroom because mollie was there, but honey clearly wanted to continue to torture that bird. kevin picked it up and took it outside, and saw many many many feathers all over the kitchen floor. there must have been quite a battle, but we didn’t hear anything.
later in the afternoon honey appeared in the kitchen with a baby rabbit. kevin put this outside as well. i’m sure honey doesn’t understand why we’re not more appreciative about the bevy of animals she brought us. last night mollie was desperately trying to get out the front door, and kevin found the same baby bunny out on the front step. honey was determined for us to keep that bunny. maybe she thought we should keep it as a pet?
actually, it was so little and so cute, we thought we would like to keep it - but not when our house is so filled with bunny-killers.
just another day here at the wild kingdom.
ok then,

kevin sent me an article about the various tainted things in china; now the chinese are saying that the media is making too big of a deal about the tainted stuff. it includes tainted fish, juice, and toy trains made with lead paint. this morning there was an article in the paper about a spice found in snack foods including veggie booty, which is something i’ve eaten.
the article kevin sent also listed “children’s snack foods:” Only 35 percent of gelatin desserts sampled met food standards, the report said, while two types of candied fruit contained 63 times the permitted amount of artificial sweetener.
not to mention the fake blood protein.
if you want to read the whole article, here it is. china’s little safety problem
here in the us of a, we’re free...free to buy whatever we want. even though there are many problems and things that need to be addressed, i think that we need to immediately make it mandatory that everything made in china is labeled MADE IN CHINA. i guess the tricky part is that some things were made here, but some of the specific ingredients, like the spice in the snack food, was made in china. SOME PARTS OF THIS WERE MADE IN CHINA, the label could say. or maybe just ALMOST EVERYTHING CONTAINS SOMETHING FROM CHINA.
in which case, we really need to start making our own snack food and toy trains.
i made some brownies yesterday. nothing in them from china. also some fig bars, and lemon squares and a chocolate mint cream pie. i was a little zealous about making stuff for today’s big 4TH OF JULY PICNIC we’re having at the lake. Nobody will be deprived of their freedom to eat dessert. half of the desserts were made with splenda, enabling those with sugar issues to eat dessert.
but hmm, WHERE DOES SPLENDA COME FROM? must look into this right away.
ok, i hope you’re enjoying your freedom,
grace
