the days sneak up on me in the summertime. they sneak up, and then they whoosh by.  this morning i’m sitting in the screened porch, mollie is lying on the rug, and les paul is perched on the table, looking outside.  no wait, he’s gone…yesterday i let him into the entire main floor of the house again, but this time with winnie down in the basement, so as not to have any more ugly run-ins involving bad kitty spraying.

today i’m going to introduce them again.  i’m hoping it will go better.  les does seem more mellow now.

yesterday when i let him into the house i took my eyes off him for a minute and he was gone.  finally i heard a little “clink” from the pantry and realized he’d squeezed himself in there.  nipping at the whiskey, no doubt.

the other morning i tried to capture the kitty cage confrontation.  here you can see that both kitties were on HIGH ALERT.

it’s a huge cage.  it will be nice when it’s finally out of the living room, because it takes up a whole lotta space.

trying to get a shot of a kitty confrontation, but winnie was just a blur.

winnie retreated to the rug, where he was lying there thinking about things.

the kitty stare-down.

winnie batted at les paul, les paul batted at winnie, but it was good that bars separated them.

winnie looked away.  that’s not big globs of dirt on the floor, it’s pieces of catnip.  i bought a catnip plant a coupla months ago and les paul LOVES it.  winnie likes it too, but only sometimes.  he’s large but he’s finicky.

and this was mollie’s reaction to the kitty showdown.  worried and deeply stressed out as usual.

i am trying to sit here and relax for a couple of minutes this morning, but les paul keeps investigating everyplace and right now he’s somewhere in one of the other rooms and it makes me a little bit nervous…

wish me luck with kitty confrontation #2 today.  an added problem is that next door, a bird built a nest in one of the thousands of potted plants that amy has.  one day she was watering and noticed that there was a wee little baby bird in the nest, but then the bird TUMBLED RIGHT OUT.  it hopped around the driveway.

amy has been keeping very close tabs on the tiny bird and she says sometimes it hops into our yard.  she was worried at first about winnie coming over and having a tiny bird snack, but then she decided he wouldn’t do that.  but then he came outside and made a beeline for their driveway, because of COURSE he’d want to gobble up the bird.  so until the bird learns to fly, winnie is forced to stay inside.

HE HATES THIS.  HE IS A VERY ANGRY KITTY.

well, sometimes he’s angry, but then he gets tired and has to sleep, or he’s very very hungry because he’s so tiny and delicate and must have a quick snack.

yesterday when he was in the basement, after a while he decided ENOUGH IS ENOUGH, and he started pounding on the basement door, so i had to put les paul back into his private quarters with hot tub room, which is really very fancy for anybody, especially a little kitty who used to live in the menard’s parking lot.

i let winnie upstairs and he proceeded to RUSH to the front door, then he HURRIED to the back door, and he was basically in a big ol’ winnie frenzy.

winnie is not usually in a frenzy.

HE WANTS TO BE OUTSIDE.

and why can’t the damn baby bird fly already, anyway?  how long does it take?  yesterday i tried to ask amy if winnie could finally get outside but she was very busy with people at her house, and she told me to call jim, who told me to see if the bird was flying but i said I DON’T KNOW WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE.  i probably would have found it, though.  so then i asked amy again and she was MUCH TOO FRANTIC with all the stuff she was dealing with, so i just let winnie out.

and then, pretty soon, amy carried him back to our house.  the birds in the nest were all a-twitter, so i guess the baby bird was still hopping around.

so anyway, like i said, wish me luck with kitty showdown #2, because winnie isn’t in a happy winnie place to begin with.  actually, i should give them both a whole lotta catnip, which does mellow them out quite a bit.

that is all for now.

ok then,

mrs. thursday morning hughes.
