snow

more photos from that big snow…

by grace on January 27, 2019

whew. these were all taken right after it snowed, the week before winnie died.

Saturday morning, Jan. 12th, Riley was determined to play in the snow even though it was piled mighty high.

intrepid riley

Shortly thereafter i shoveled the back deck off the bedroom and a path to the kitty house. les immediately had to march right into the house.

i tried to get a video of him as he leapt through the big snow, but he was too fast for me.

i woke up on sunday morning to more snow. i looked out the front window and there was a deer.

kevin had been gone since friday night and was supposed to come back saturday, but because the roads were horrible he stayed away another night. jim had done lots of plowing and snow-blowing on saturday but he hadn’t been able to get to mom’s driveway – the tractor had started leaking something and he was worried it’d completely break down, and then the snow blower started smoking.

so on sunday morning he shoveled this channel in mom’s drive.

Mom hadn’t been able to get out for a whole day and of course was anxious to leave the prison of her house. Jim thought we should shovel a wide trench so that when kevin came home he’d be able to easily plow the rest of the driveway.

before i started i took this last picture.

we worked for maybe an hour, and jim pointed out that it was peaceful in the snow. when i walked back home i was dismayed to see the state of kevin’s shelter.

woops

he normally parks his truck under the shelter, and i remember going out to check on it saturday night…but i know i didn’t look thoroughly enough, because if i had, i’d have poked at all the snow on the roof with a broom. damn.

when kevin got home he managed to shovel enough snow off the roof to get the tractor out, added some kind of fluid or other, and made quick work of mom’s driveway.

monday morning, the 14th, riley was happy to go out into the snowy yard.

it was cloudy that morning with the sun just peeking through.

les and riley on monday night.

Tuesday night, the 15th, les was on top of the fridge. i don’t think he’s been lying there like that before.

Izzy looking so cute, snuggled up against the cold.

i took this photo of a deer in amy’s yard, right before i went to mom’s house on friday the 18th. because they have bird feeders in the front the deer are always gathered for a snack.

after that i went to mom’s to watch a movie, and later kevin and i got home, and then all the bad stuff happened with winnie. *sigh*

he was a very, very good kitty.

ok then,

mrs. late sunday afternoon hughes.

before the storm…

by grace on January 18, 2019

the first part of january was snow-free, kind of warm-ish. i took this picture because it struck me as funny, this planter inside another planter, covered in water. and then it froze, and i bet it’s thoroughly covered in snow right now.

kind of like a planter in aspic…

a couple of days later i had lunch with my friend julie at the yacht club, and i could see white pelicans on the island! not a lot of them, but it was nice to see that there’s still here.

on sunday the 6th we took a nice walk at Lincoln Memorial Gardens. we were pretty bundled up, but met people walking who weren’t wearing hats or anything. i like to be warm enough when outside.

here’s mom’s new cat! she used to be called Chance, i think, but mom is going to call her Kitty. easy to remember. isn’t she darling? such big eyes! she’s been living in mom’s spare bedroom for a couple of weeks now i believe, but we’ve finally found a gate tall enough to put in the doorway to keep her separated from mom’s other cat, Hobbs.

Hobbs is maybe 10 years old, and has a serious weight problem. so we didn’t think she’d be able to get over the fence and into the bedroom. here’s the fence:

the tall white fence is something that’s been sitting around in our back yard ever since we moved here; mom and dad left it when they vacated the premises. there was another fence in front of the white one, but somehow hobbs managed to get over it. a friend speculated that maybe she climbed it? it’s a mystery, but now that we havethis other fence to support it she hasn’t been able to find her way in.

when hobbs did get into the room she was just after Kitty’s food even though they both have the same stuff. because they’re cats.

mom said that when hobbs got in, and it happend three times, i think, there was a horrible yowling coming from both cats. the last time it happened she came into the bedroom and kitty was on top of the bed and hobbs underneath it. so maybe kitty is a little bit fearless? but she did have a cut on her nose.

i’m hoping that they’ll eventually warm up to each other, that’d be so nice for both of them . Kitty had been living in a house where the owners had gotten a dog, and the kitty had been in terror for two years, even though the dog didn’t try to chase her or anything.

maybe it’ll work out. i’m hopeful. this morning when i was at mom’s, Kitty scurried down the hall to mom’s bedroom and then back again to her sanctuary. she bravely did that a few times, getting more confident.

on the 10th, les and riley tried to relax.

happy boys!

last friday, the 11th, kevin was out of town and mom and i got chinese food and took it next door to amy and jim’s. i was highly amused by my fortune.

hmm…don’t think so.

the snow started at about seven that night, and didn’t seem so bad…

but it never seems bad at the start, does it?

kevin took a trip with his friend glenn, and glenn left his car in our driveway. this is what it looked like by 10 that night…

still not bad…

and this is the next morning. about seven or so inches of snow.

kind of buried…

and this is sunday morning after a couple more inches fell. jim spent hours saturday morning using the snow plow and the snow blower, and did a great job of clearing our driveway and his own. but hmm, the car was pretty snowed in by this point.

i have more photos of our snowy weekend but won’t get to them before the snow starts to fall again tonight.

i’m completely sick of winter now. today i was thinking about the nice time we had in florida last year, that lovely condo on the beach…

ok then,

mrs. at least it stays light longer in the evening although i haven’t seen the sun for days Hughes.

snow snow snow!

by grace on January 20, 2016

four and a half inches last night.  i’m trying not to think about it, because i don’t have to leave the house til after nine.  hopefully the roads will be fine and dandy by then.

kevin is out snowblowing.  a very good fella.

meanwhile…this is just a week and a half ago, when it was so warm that i took les for a walk.  we both enjoyed it thoroughly.

of course he had to check out the new wood pile, which kevin stacked after chopping up the latest fallen dead tree.

j17

the ferns were still so green…i got up off the couch to look at them now, and besides being covered in snow, they look pretty dead now.  but spring is RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER.

this is early in the morning of the 10th, when the fog on the lake looked so cool.

last night i thought about why i dislike snow so much.  the thing is, it’s pretty, and i enjoyed going outside last night to stand there and watch it and listen to the quiet.  yes, it’s beautiful.

but not only would it be necessary to not have to go out in it at all, or drive in it which i really can’t stand, it’s also that i really like to be outside.  but not in the snow.

i should try to embrace it, we should get out the cross-country skis and kevin could once again attempt to teach me and i could fall a whole lot.

i’d be perfectly happy to live in a place where a flake of snow never appeared again.

ok then, happy wednesday,

mrs. g. inside hughes.
